I will start by saying that everything this funeral home touched, including my grandmother herself, went wrong. I feel it is also important to note that my granny was a longtime friend of Charles Smith, attending church together for more than 20 years. She was also close friends with one of the funeral home employees, Ruben, who specifically requested to service her funeral.
Andy O**** was unfortunately our funeral director. When making service arrangements, we went ahead and paid for an escorted precession to the cemetery, as it was approx. a 30 min drive from the funeral home. We gave Andy a picture of my granny for makeup purposes, and requested, if possible, he put her dentures in.
Friday: viewing. I arrived early and could hear my, normally quiet, mother sobbing from outside the closed doors, crying "it doesn't look like her". My granny had been in the hospital for several months prior to her passing, and while she looked sick in the hospital, she still looked like HER, just a sick her. The woman I saw in the casket looked nothing like what she looked like as we watched her pass away peacefully just days before. Her dentures that we had requested be put in looked as if they were carelessly and forcefully shoved in, and lips sealed, so you could see the denture outline protruding out. Her mouth looked stretched, almost like a forced smile. The shade of makeup Andy used on her face was so dark, it made her look like a different nationality. He put an awful pearly pink lipstick on her...she just looked so unnatural, and rather than spending this time grieving with family, my distraught mother felt the need to stand at the doors to warn everyone entering of what to expect when they go up to see her.
Saturday, service day: The service itself was beautiful, thanks to her wonderful Pastor. Towards the end of the service, we could hear Andy talking loudly outside the room. Immediately after the service, he rushed up to the front row to tell us that the escort was a no show. Turns out, Andy "faxed" the request, but the escort service "received a blank fax" so never received the request. That's right, that was his excuse - a failed fax. In 2021. The precession was a free-for-all without an escort. Cars were cutting us off, the driver of the hearse continued through yellow lights making everyone behind hit the red lights.
When everyone finally made it to the cemetery, my father noticed that the vault had the wrong middle name on it. Nothing even close to her real middle name. Andy pointed the finger at the cemetery who quickly fought back stating that they only put the name that is given to them by the FUNERAL HOME. Andy gave them the wrong middle name. He called his supervisor to see what to do, cowering behind a tree on the phone in the middle of the cemetery. Our options were to have them sand down and fix the name, or order a new vault, which wouldn't be in until the following Monday, meaning that my granny would have to go back under the "care" of Charles Smith Funeral Home. We made it very clear that they were not going to touch her again. The name finally got corrected, after having to redo it multiple times.
After the graveside service, I got an opportunity to speak with Andy. I needed to know why everything went wrong. I specifically asked about the makeup and asked why she looks so different. Andy proceeded to tell me that due to the "laceration" on her head, he had to apply heavy makeup. My mom heard this and quickly ran over to explain, as this was the first time I heard of a laceration. Turns out, sometime during transit after she was picked up from the hospital, my precious grandmother received an " L-shaped, half-dollar size laceration on her forehead", with no explanation as to HOW it got there. We still have not received a satisfactory answer as to where it came from and how it happened.
Charles Smith has apologized to my mother, however, my family was not able to properly say goodbye to the most wonderful person in our world because we were dealing with repeated mistakes at the hands of Charles Smith Funeral Home. My granny didn't deserve the treatment she received, and my family didn't deserve it either. Nothing will ever get us that closure back. My grandmother trusted this funeral home, trusted her friends within this funeral home, and they treated her with complete disrespect.
Please, do not trust Charles Smith Funeral Home with the care of your loved one.
