We hired ****** ***** for landscaping services. The positive thing is he works hard and fast. The very negative thing is he up charges materials, rentals and fuel at rates equivalent to robbery! He gets away with it by lying about his cost and withholding his receipts. He charged us a 500% mark up on pea gravel alone. He stated that he spent $195 on gravel (claiming he purchased and hauled 3 yards of gravel), then charged us $245 for it. The truth is he purchased and hauled 1 yard of gravel at $48. He then only used about 2/3 of that 1 yard on our property and kept the rest for himself. He charged a dump fee of $870 for a half full trailer of mostly yard waste and some construction waste. The fee should have been half that (at the most). He also charged fuel costs on top of that! I have no way of verifying if he actually used 9 yards of mulch on my property, but I can say it is highly unlikely that the small pile of mulch in his trailer was 9 total yards. We were charged $98.33 per yard. His labor rates are at a premium too. Charged us $1,000/ day for a two-man crew that worked 8 hours per day. Thats $62.50 per hour per man. We discovered these things after we paid him. When we confronted him, we only knew about the gross over charge of gravel. We told him to either bring more gravel to our home and put it where we want it or refund $180 of over charge. He refunded $180 (only after we stopped payment on original check). He originally quoted us a lump sum without itemizing materials, labor, rentals, etc. When I asked for an itemized invoice, he went into a panic. He also left my driveway dirty. He removed the weed barrier on the side of my house - so there is now no weed barrier under this gravel work. He stated to us, when confronted with his exorbitant prices, that according to TX law he is allowed to charge whatever he wants for materials since he paid sales tax on them when he bought them. If thats truly legal - who knows, but it is far from ethical!
