My family member was admitted to Knoxville Center for Behavioral Medicine. My primary expectation was that they would receive humane treatment and emotional support during their stay. Unfortunately, my experience fell far short of these expectations.
Facilities and Cleanliness: Medical equipment was often dysfunctional and the dryer was broken so washed clothes stank.
Staff Qualifications and Behavior: The staff at Knoxville Center for Behavioral Medicine were largely inconsistent in their behavior and seemed to be lacking in their qualifications. Many seemed indifferent or hostile towards patients. For instance, there was a lack of communication between staff and patients, with requests for basic necessities like shoes or access to phone numbers often ignored or met with hostility. A lot of time I would receive a call from my family member about mistreatment and only after I called to speak with a staff member did anything turn around for them.
Therapy and Treatment: they only saw a therapist once during the entire stay, and medication management was problematic. There were issues with providing the correct medication, and the administration of medication was often mismanaged.
Safety Concerns: The mixing of patients with different needs, such as suicidal patients with those detoxing or inmates from a prison, raised significant safety concerns. The environment did not feel safe or conducive to recovery for my family member.
Management: During their stay, there was a notable visit from management and board members, which seemed to result in a temporary facade of improvement. However, this quickly reverted to the chaotic and inadequate conditions once they left.
Overall Experience: My experience with Knoxville Center for Behavioral Medicine has shattered my faith in the mental health system. My family member has never felt less human or more neglected in their entire life.
