I bought a 09 Subaru Outback from Fast Lane Auto's in Spearfish on Oct 26th and drove the car home where a couple days later the check engine light came on and I called to get it scheduled to be evaluated by CW Auto in Sheridan, WY. I work from home and only go to the gym or to feed my horses so I put less then 230 miles on the car since I bought it. After having the car reviewed on Nov 22nd, I was informed that the car needed a whole new engine which would result in 6K to 10K to fix. When I contacted Fast Lane Auto's they essentially informed me that it wasn't their problem and that the best they could do was offer $1500 for fixing the car up. I spent my whole saves to purchase this car, $4700, and do not have an extra 4500 even if it was just 6K to fix..

Just extremely upsetting that this is the route I am having to go. I understood I was buying a use car and was prepared to do scheduled maintenance on it but I cannot afford a 6 to 10 thousand dollar engine to fix the car and getting it running.

The car was ALSO falsely advertise (I do have photos to show) saying it had heated seats which the heated seats do not work and two buttons on the control panel (defroster and one other) do not work as well.

They also haven't mailed out the title, I've asked about it today (December 2nd, 2024) and was informed they had yet to pay off the "loan" on the car but would do so today and get it mailed out.

Due to not being able to afford fixing this car, its being junked. I cannot fix it. I got out of a 5 year relationship where I had a double income to now my income and its just not feasible.

Thank you for hearing my story. ****** *****

      Business Response

      Date: 12/04/2024

This customer purchased a used 2009 Subaru Outback with 182,568 miles on 10/21/2024. The customer had her uncle pre-inspect the vehicle the day before her purchase. On the day of purchase the customer and her uncle test drove the vehicle to their satisfaction prior to completing the purchase. During the transaction, we explained to the customer the vehicle is sold in AS-IS condition, and without any dealer warranty, using the Federal Buyers Guide and our sales contract. The customer signed both documents acknowledging the vehicle was being purchased as-is. We also offered the customer the opportunity to purchase a service contract, which she declined in writing. At the time of the sale, the vehicle was in great operating condition and was readily accepted by the customer.

On 11/04/2024 the customer placed the following review on our ******** page and ****** business page:

“I'm not writing this review to be nasty with this company. Overall my experience with them was very pleasant and easy to work with however I feel they falsely advertised a car that i purchased to have heated seats, and it does not.. it's a repair I will have to do as well as some of the dashboard buttons not working like the defroster for winter........ I haven't owned the car for two weeks and already a check engine light has come on and now I'm waiting over 20+ days to get it checked out before finding out what's really wrong with the car.
I understand it is an older vehicle with higher mileage (09 Subaru Outback with 180k miles) and that's not the issue, just wish there would have been some up front honesty. Obviously my bad for not paying attention better but I live out of state and trusted the source.
Would highly recommend getting a pre purchase exam done on the vehicle you plan on purchasing from them.
      Very kind folks.”

The customer did not make any attempt to contact us regarding the problems she experienced. We reached out to the customer in goodwill to better understand her issues. The customer stated the vehicle didn’t have heated seats as advertised. We explained that the vehicle does indeed have heated seats, to which she then acknowledged they just weren’t working properly. The customer also stated the check engine light was on and the vehicle was running rough, and that the defroster wasn’t working correctly. It was explained again to the customer that the vehicle was sold as-is and didn’t exhibit any of those issues at the time of sale, nor during her drive home (which was ~200 hundred miles). The customer indicated that she only wanted to take the vehicle to a mechanic she knew but who couldn’t get it in until late November.

After she had the car checked out by her acquaintance, the customer contacted us to say she was advised to get rid of the car and that she wanted her money back. We again explained that the vehicle ran fine at the time of the sale, and that we do not offer refunds on vehicles. Even though we weren’t obligated, we offered to assist with the repairs up to $1,500 (31% of the purchase price) with a receipt proving the repairs to the vehicle had been completed, as a gesture of goodwill.

This gesture of goodwill was rebuffed, with the customer stating that the only resolution acceptable to her was for us to buy the vehicle back. The customer indicated that if we didn’t acquiesce to her demands, she would be writing negative reviews on ********, ******* and filing a complaint with the BBB.

The customer misunderstood the title process. The title was mailed to her within the timeframe allotted by the law. The customer was provided with a temporary tag. The title was sent to her via USPS and she was given the tracking number.

Fast Lane Autos always strives to provide excellent vehicles and customer service – thoroughly explaining the risks in purchasing used vehicles, while also providing a fast and friendly no-pressure car buying experience. Unfortunately, we don’t have any way to know when a used vehicle will experience an issue, nor control what contributes to a mechanical breakdown or even whether a proper diagnosis is made, which is why we specifically go over the Federal Buyers Guide, offer extended service contracts, and sell all vehicles as is. The customer signed or initialed documents, in no less than four places, acknowledging she understood this.
