About This Business
Charleston Animal Society (CAS) was founded to prevent cruelty to animals.
Locally, CAS takes in nearly 100% of the county’s animals (70 species), sheltering over 9,000 animals and caring for upward of 20,000 annually.
In 2013, CAS built the first No Kill Community in the Southeast, which many felt improbable, if not impossible to do. Succeeding in this and sustaining it for over 10 years, in 2022 CAS launched No Kill South Carolina 2024 (NKSC), a statewide initiative to build the first No Kill state in the south.
NKSC 2024, at its core, aims to build capacity community by community in SC in the spirit of “teaching a man to fish.” The story doesn’t end here. Using 10 Strategies, we continue to safeguard animals in our community and humanely manage overpopulation in spite of the influx of human population to the area.
Products and Services
This company offers animal sheltering, companion animal adoption, spay/neuter veterinary services, and emergency disaster response. CAS is the only animal welfare organization listed as a resource in the State of SC Emergency Plan (ESF 17). Our team responds to requests for assistance from animal shelters and organizations, law enforcement, animal control, and national animal welfare organizations. These situations include all 46 SC counties for natural disasters, such as hurricanes or flooding as well as human-made emergencies such as puppy mills, dog fighting, and cruelty cases.
