I had an Amtrol indirect water heater installed in my home in Sept. of 2017. The water heater failed this month, it was leaking and when we contacted Amtrol tech support the suggested they wanted us to shut that tank down immediately because of safety concerns. They confirmed it was under warranty (we spoke to them both verbally and via email exchange) but they had no tanks to replace it with. They searched their inventory and I even offered to drive to RI to get it but they had nothing in their supply chain. They suggested I go to one of their distributors and they would work the warranty through the distributor. They did tell me they would apply a credit on any manufacturers tank since they had none to offer. My plumber found two tanks at the closet distributor and sent me to go pick one ASAP as there are little or no tanks of any manufacturer in the supply chain. When I arrived and the supply house found it was a warranty replacement for Amtrol they claimed both tanks were spoken for and would not give one up. I offered to pay for a tank outright and take the tank when they had inventory come in they said they could not commit to when they would have any and would not take payment in advance. We had been without hot water in our home for a week at this point and have two young children. Our plumber was able to secure a tank from another plumbing companies stock and have them **** us direct for the cost of the tank. Amtrol is now refusing to honor their warranty despite the fact that they know there is no supply of these indirect tanks to be sourced and we had no choice but to get any tank we could so as to restore our hot water to our home.

We moved into our home in 2013 and immediately replaced the boiler on 6/16/13 which included a corresponding water heater - a Amtrol Boilermate water heater. After four years, the first water heater was leaking from the connection ports at the bottom. The water heater was replaced 7/27/17 under warranty - I had to pay for labor. Four years later the replacement water heater leaks from the same location as the first. After several emails to Amtrol and my local plumber, I was able to have the water heater replaced 4/1/21 under warranty - again I had to pay for labor. This new water heater is designed differently than the prior two with the connection ports moved to the top of the tank - presumably due to defects in the old design. The new water heater, however, has already begun to leak two years later. It is now 9/5/23 and I have scheduled an appointment for the plumber to inspect the problem - again. This will make for three Amtrol Boilermate water heaters replaced over the past ten years. This is completely unacceptable for a unit that retails for $1,800. I will never use another Amtrol product again and I do not recommend their products at all.

There are other reasons why a product can fail that do not relate to manufacturer defect, such as excessive incoming supply pressure, aggressive water, or improper installation.

The Manual and label on the tank clearly warn do not locate in an area where leaking or flooding could cause damage to the surrounding area. Most local plumbing codes require that a drain and/or drip pan be installed to mitigate any water damage. There is no evidence provided that a drain or a drip pan was installed to avoid damage.  The label on the unit as well as the warning in the Manual warns Failure to follow the instructions in the accompanying manual can cause a rupture or explosion; causing serious or fatal injury, leaking or flooding and/or property damage.

The Manual also warns to Determine whether your water is corrosive or acidic, and that there are no suspended solids, toxic or other substances or abnormally high chlorine levels in the water that could damage or affect the water heater or the rest of your plumbing system.

The Manual additionally warns that appliance should be in an area where water leakage from the tank or connections will not result in damage to areas adjacent to the appliance or to lower floors of the structure.  When such a location cannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan must be installed under the appliance. The pan must be connected to a drain.

If the unit had failed and/or was exposed to over-pressurization, the temperature and relief valve (T&P) would have been discharging giving the property owner an indication there was a problem in the system. Periodic inspection of the unit, as recommended in the Installation and Operation Manual (Manual) could have detected any problems and the unit could have been replaced prior to catastrophic failure.
