I contacted NINE landscaping companies about rototilling a patch of my yard filled with stinging nettles and thistles, along with a bunch of tree stumps, so I could turn it into a garden. *** ******* was the ONLY one to even give me a bid.With only one bid, I hesitated a bit, but when *** came to look at my yard he gave me some excellent advice (and I know a bit about plants because my father ran a nursery) and struck me as honest. It turn out my intuition was right.Initially *** said that he would have to rototill the spot multiple times in order to kill all the millions of seeds in the ground - once in July, once in September, and once the following spring. Since we had several weeks before he was available, I weed-whacked and then covered the patch with black plastic in the hopes of killing as much as possible that way.*** just completed the first tilling. When I went to pay him, he said that because it took him only four hours instead of the six he had estimated, he reduced my bill by about 25% from the bid. AND, because the black plastic had done such a great job of killing off the weeds, he said he wouldn't need to rototill again in the fall if we just let the weeds re-germinate for a couple of weeks and then cover them with the black plastic again. After that, he would come back and rototill it next spring so it was ready to be planted. I'm planning to hire him to help with landscape design at that point.*** was honest, extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and clearly more interested in doing things right than in making a quick buck. I heartily recommend him.
