I have to concur with what the other reviewer wrote here. Based on our experiences detailed further on Yelp, the county would be much better served if this place would shut down and the animals would go to a much more compassionate shelter. A great example of one and a current one that needs more adopters/donations all the time is the Hillside SPCA in the countryside outside Pottsville. They do allow adopters from outside Schuylkill County with a little extra paperwork and their approval(s), of course, but it is a sheer delight to adopt from them. They really care about the animals there--and it shows! They are the polar opposite of the Berks ARL. The dogs have a lot of space in outdoor play areas to stretch out; and the cats, for the most part, are roaming free around a very large cat room with plenty of cat trees, etc. to keep them happy, occupied and exercised with adjacent large group pens for cats that need to be separated from the rest due to which ones get along with the others, etc. The cat and kitten pens open out onto an outdoor enclosed large viewing patio for them. They do have some cages for use for intakes and those needing quarantining, but they are the exception for most cats, not the rule like at Berks ARL, which I think is terrible. They have plenty of room on their applications to enter all of your pet information, not just a few spaces; and they believe that multiple cat ownership is an asset for those cats they adopt out and not a liability like at the ARL. One of the workers there told us they even have the same number of cats that we do, in fact! They knew all the detailed information of all our cats last year before they adopted to us (unfortunately, the 1st 6 mo. old kitten passed from a previously undetected immune disorder about 3 months afterwards), and they adopted out 5 more to us over the span of last year. The cat room supervisor looks forward to our updates/photos and says, when one needs surgery, she even prays for them!
