I am an author who used Draft2Digital to distribute my books. Recently I received an email requesting that I complete a Know Your Customer (KYC) verification through their partner, Plaid, in order to continue publishing and receiving payments.

I followed the provided verification link and attempted to complete the process. However, the system required phone number verification via SMS. I attempted several times to receive the verification code on my Armenian mobile number, but no code was delivered. Because of this technical issue, the verification session could not be completed and the system marked it as unsuccessful.

Shortly afterward, I received a notice from Draft2Digital stating that my account failed the mandatory KYC check and would be permanently closed.

I did not submit incorrect information or false documents, and the verification process was never completed due to the SMS delivery failure. I have already contacted Draft2Digital support to explain the situation and requested the opportunity to restart or complete the KYC verification process.

I am requesting assistance in resolving this matter so that I may complete the required verification and continue using the service.

    Business Response

    Date: 03/16/2026

Draft2Digital requires users to complete Know Your Customer (KYC) verification in order to continue publishing and receiving payments through our platform. In this case, the complainant was notified that KYC completion was required.
We understand the complainant states there were issues receiving SMS verification messages on an Armenian mobile number. However, Draft2Digital is not able to manually bypass, waive, or mark KYC as complete when the required verification has not been successfully completed through the designated process. The inability to complete third-party verification, for whatever reason, does not satisfy the account requirement.
Because the KYC requirement remained incomplete, the account was closed in accordance with our compliance requirements and Terms of Service. At this time, we are not reinstating the account.
We appreciate the opportunity to respond.

    Business Response

    Date: 03/23/2026

While the Terms of Service do not use the acronym “KYC” or name a specific verification vendor (which could change over time), it does expressly authorize Draft2Digital, directly or through third parties, to make any inquiries it considers appropriate to verify account information provided by the account holder.

    Under Section 9 Subsection h.
    9. Program Eligibility and RegistrationAs a condition to participating in the Program, you represent, warrant, covenant and agree that you...
    h. authorize us, directly or through third parties, to make any inquiries we consider appropriate to verify account information you provide;
The Terms also require that account information be accurate and provide Draft2Digital the right to terminate the Agreement at any time with or without cause. Accordingly, the absence of a provider name, acronym, or step-by-step verification workflow does not mean the process is unauthorized or outside the governing agreement. Nor does a claimed technical difficulty create a contractual entitlement to continued participation where required account verification could not be completed. When an account is required to complete identity verification, we are only able to rely on the outcome of our verification process. If the information or documentation submitted does not successfully verify through that process, we are not able to override the result based on a written assertion that it was just technical error.

    Complaint: REMOVED

I am rejecting this response because:

This matter extends beyond a single account or a single company. It reflects a broader issue in how automated verification systems are being implemented and relied upon in modern digital services.

In this case, identity verification was not meaningfully completed, not due to refusal, misrepresentation, or lack of cooperation, but due to a technical limitation of the system itself. Nevertheless, the outcome of that system was treated as definitive, without alternative pathways or human review.

When technical processes become the sole authority in determining compliance, a fundamental shift occurs: the individual is no longer evaluated based on their actions or intent, but on whether they are compatible with the system.

The Terms of Service allow verification and termination, but they do not define a process where a technical failure is equivalent to non-compliance. The distinction between inability and unwillingness is essential, yet it is not preserved here.

This raises a broader concern beyond this case. As digital platforms increasingly rely on automated third-party verification systems, the lack of transparency, procedural safeguards, and alternative pathways creates structural barriers shaped by geography, infrastructure, and the limitations of the systems themselves.

Such practices risk redefining access to digital participation not by law or agreement, but by the constraints of underlying technologies.

This is not solely a contractual issue. It is a question of how responsibility is distributed between human participants and automated systems, and whether technical outcomes should carry the same weight as verified human conduct.

I submit this response not only to address this individual case, but to highlight a pattern that deserves broader attention as data practices and verification systems continue to evolve.

    Sincerely,

    REMOVED

My book, "The Essential Guide to Fitness and Nutrition," was reviewed and approved for ebook publication by Draft2Digital and was distributed to major online retailers.

When I attempted to publish the print version of the exact same manuscript, it was flagged for a minor technical error. I contacted customer support on August 7th to politely ask for assistance.

Instead of providing help, Draft2Digital responded by blocking my book entirely and sending me a generic, insulting email accusing my original work of being "recycled," "public domain," or from "internet searches." This is a false and defamatory accusation.

The company's actions are contradictory and appear to be retaliatory. They approved and published my book, but then blocked it and made false accusations immediately after I contacted them for support. This is an unfair and unprofessional business practice.

    Business Response

    Date: 08/12/2025

The complainant first submitted The Essential Guide to Fitness & Nutrition (Book ID: REMOVED) in February 2025. This title was reviewed and rejected by all of our retail partners as PLR (Private Label Rights), non-unique content. Our Terms of Service prohibit resubmitting previously denied material under a new project to bypass review restrictions.
Despite this policy, the complainant later uploaded the same manuscript as a new project (Book ID: 3084476). Amazon immediately blocked the book and confirmed it was identical to the previously rejected title. This was a clear attempt to circumvent both our content standards and vendor guidelines, which is a violation of our Terms of Service.
As a result, distribution was denied and the account was terminated. This decision is final and will not be reconsidered. Our actions were consistent with our obligations to our retail partners and our own policies, and no apology or reinstatement will be issued.

    Business Response

    Date: 08/13/2025

Your latest message again fails to address the core issue: your original upload from February, The Essential Guide to Fitness & Nutrition, was rejected by all retail partners for PLR/non-unique content. Resubmitting previously blocked material under a new project is a direct violation of our Terms of Service, which clearly states this is grounds for immediate account termination.
This matter has been reviewed in full. Our decision to terminate your account stands, and we will not be reconsidering or re-reviewing any further communication from you regarding this issue.

I am trying to get this publishing company to finish publishing my books. There is no immediate monetary complaint other than I can't sell my books online until they complete publishing them correctly. I have tried repeatedly to get them to fix the problems, but I only get an auto-response that has nothing to do with resolving the issue.

    Business Response

One June 24, 2025, the account holder uploaded a back cover file with its own barcode space—even though our templates, guides, and website clearly instruct the clients not to include one, since we supply it automatically. We flagged the redundant barcode once and asked the client to remove it. Instead of correcting it immediately, they chose to lodge a baseless BBB complaint. On June 27 the client submitted the fixed file, and Draft2Digital accepted the proejct the same day, well ahead of schedule. The client's complaint of "auto-response that has nothing to do with resolving the issue" is auto-responses from our site letting the account holder know the issue has been resolved and the book has now published. There is no outstanding issue. The client was provided instructions in the original email date notifying them of the nature of the issue as well as how to fix the issue (dated June 24, 2025). Since they have now followed the instructions in the email notice sent to them and made the necessary corrections, the book is ready for publication and author copy order. From start to approval, this book took 3 days. Uploaded on June 24th, corrections requested 2 hours later. New file supplied by client on June 27th and book was approved for distribution on June 27th.

Your account has been permanently terminated due to noncompliance with mandatory Know Your Customer (KYC) protocols and the use of a fraud-flagged address.
You submitted REMOVED;as your business address. This location is widely known as a virtual address used by thousands of shell companies, and it has been publicly linked to multiple fraud investigations, including warnings from state and federal-level sources, and more than a dozen reports by individuals of fraud on the Better Business Bureau website. Your account has been closed.
No payment will be issued when accounts are refusing to comply with standard KYC processes per our Terms of Service REMOVEDand in line with federal tax reporting laws.

    Dear Better Business Bureau,
We are writing to formally respond to the complaint filed by REMOVEDagainst Draft2Digital. Below is a clear account of the situation, along with evidence to address the baseless claims made by the complainant.
Submission and Immediate Blocking of the Book:
On January 4, 2024, REMOVEDsubmitted a single ebook to our platform with an excessive and unsupported price of $256.
This submission was immediately blocked by our system, as none of our partnered vendors accept books at such an overinflated price point. The account holder was immediately informed of this.
As a result, the book was never approved, never distributed to any vendors, and never made available for purchase by any readers.

    No Money Owed:
As no books have been published or sold through our service, there is no money owed to the account holder.
    Account Ban:
Due to the ongoing harassment of our staff and the unfounded claims made by the account holder, their account has been permanently banned. They are no longer allowed to access or use Draft2Digitals website or services.
    Draft2Digitals Final Response:
This issue is fully resolved, as no books were ever published or sold, and the account holder has been given multiple opportunities to address the issue within our platforms guidelines.
Draft2Digital has acted transparently, ethically, and within our policies to address this situation.

Can we arrange a conference call with REMOVEDupon his return with REMOVED.  I find it offensive that I have to wait one year just to receive wages from two years prior, intellectual property borrowed and utilized, dsitrbuted illegally, being used as progenitor material only to discredit the author rather than the book.   The author is baffled because people are still reading it and he can track the sales and open file with UBL.   The sale and readership pre dates the movement.  Now, Im wondering who else should I gip when Im out shopping.  THere are plenty of non flirtable retail workers, and employees in government and medical/grad schools.   I pay all of them .  Even the small liquor distributors who should be on podiums.  I know my worth.  I am near royalty in three years.  Class A1.  Ive already filed with consumer credits in REMOVED, BBB in REMOVEDwith REMOVED(REMOVEDcomplaint id) and now why should I file a lawyer dispute for money I am willfully owed.   Adavances, hotels, lawyers.

Currently I am a dual citizen and am facing a few challenges within the current state of affairs. I am a new REMOVEDauthor, recently upcoming and notified as an A lister in REMOVED(Executive level, CEO) and am having a dispute over a failure of payment, wage theft,t for a large scale high asset project that was within inception and completion between the years 2017 and 2022. This will serve as Draft2Digitals final response to your repeated and baseless complaints. We have responded three separate times over the course of a year, and we will not continue to entertain these harassing claims.
Your book was never published through Draft2Digital.
We do not accept content at the price points you stated ($256$275).
No vendors we work with allow books to be listed at such an exorbitant, unsellable price, which is why your submission was immediately declined and never went live. Your account was terminated and closed, and no listings every published through our service.
Your claim of making sales through REMOVEDand REMOVEDis false. Draft2Digital does not distribute to Etsy or REMOVEDand we never have. In your last BBB complaint, you claimed to have sold through REMOVED, a vendor that doesn't even support or offer ebook publication!
Any assertion that sales were made through vendors we do not offer for a book we never published is blatantly untrue.
    Your continued harassment is unacceptable.
You never had a book published through Draft2Digital.
You continue to fabricate claims of bestseller status and sales metrics that do not exist.
Your repeated BBB complaints amount to nothing more than an attempt to harass our company over a book that was never approved, published, or distributed. You do not have an account with REMOVEDand you never had a book published by Draft2Digital. CEASE AND DESIST

I been an author and writer for 25 yrs, a self-publisher at REMOVEDfor 11 yrs and self-publisher at D2D for 4 yrs. Regardless of the REMOVEDprocess which is really awful and bureaucratic, and the support team which is unprofessional, they also decided to terminate my account suddenly because they found some of the content for one of my books are available free on own website! There is no intellectual property issue here, or violation of copyrights. They could just ask to remove this free content like what REMOVEDand other self-publisher do. But they decided to ban my account by their own! They need to understand that university professors like me care more about open-access science rather than making money by selling science. However, I admit my mistake but I believe, if people buy books and discover that a part of it is freely available on the internet, they will be disappointed for the money they spent, and at this point any seller should refund them and cancel this selling process, there will be no royalty for authors and no money for this refunded book. Simple and easy! But D2D is totally messing around! And don't understand that authors are their business partners typically like their vendors. D2D is not flexible in negotiation and is not friendly at all! They don't respect authors! I regret publishing 60 Books with them! I don't advise anyone to do. U better stick with REMOVED.

We are writing in response to the complaint regarding the termination of an author’s account on our platform.
The issue stems from the fact that the author posted the full content of their book for free online at REMOVED. Buyers who purchased this content through our partner vendors later discovered the book was freely available online and issued complaints to those vendors. In turn, the vendors filed official complaints with Draft2Digital, as this created a poor customer experience.
While the author believed refunding buyers would resolve the issue (which one vendor did), this did not address the core problem. Our vendors have strict policies outlined in their Terms of Service that state they reserve the right to remove content from sale if it generates buyer complaints and creates a poor customer experience. In this case, paying full price for content that is available for free online falls under that category.
After notifying the author of this, they agreed to remove the free content from their website. Upon confirmation of the content removal and their agreement not to post freely available material if they wished to sell it through our partner vendors, we reinstated their account. We take these matters seriously as maintaining a positive experience for buyers is critical to our relationships with our vendors.

After dropping a vendor with Draft2Digital, they blocked my content that has been on Amazon since 2019. They claim it's Amazon that is blocking it but it is not. The irony is they just sent me royalties from REMOVEDwhen they blocked it a couple of weeks before. They are costing me money. In addition their phones are down and they have not returned my calls.

Thank you for bringing this complaint to our attention. We appreciate the opportunity to address and clarify the situation described by the poster.
The authors book was blocked by Draft2Digital in compliance with our contractual agreements with Amazon, which strictly prohibit publishing content that is freely available online. Prior to submitting any books through our service to Amazon, authors must confirm that no portion of their book can be found freely available online. The author confirmed this requirement but subsequently posted the book freely available on their website: REMOVED.
On July 8, 2024, the author was informed via email from our support team that "A large amount of the contents of your book were found freely available online via multiple sources, one of which appears to be your own website. Such content is not permitted by Amazon from our service, as they have strict rules and regulations for the content that is submitted from aggregate services."

Despite this notification, the author chose to argue the validity of this information and escalated the complaint to the BBB instead of resolving it directly with our team.

We have confirmed that the author has now removed the portions of the book from the aforementioned website, which allows us to resubmit the book to Amazon on their behalf. It is crucial to follow the established procedures and communicate directly with the team capable of providing assistance, rather than posting unfounded complaints on the BBB website.
We will respond directly to the author with this same information, reinforcing the importance of adhering to the publishing guidelines and maintaining open lines of communication with our support team.

Amazon allows direct KDP account holders to make a small portion of the book free online as part of their marketing efforts, however to publish through Draft2Digital, no portion can be freely available online. Authors are asked to confirm this policy during Amazon approval, in writing, and authors are asked to confirm this policy individually for each book uploaded for publication to Amazon. This author was asked to do both and did do both. When portions of the book were found freely available on their blog, the book was flagged as no longer in compliance and removed from Amazon. The author was notified of the issue in writing from Customer Support. We do not make exceptions to this rule, as our contractual agreements with Amazon depend on all authors following these requirements to remain in good standing and to continue to see their content live on Amazon through our service. The portions of the book that were posted online were removed from the author's blog and the book has been resubmitted to Amazon for publication.
As a reminder, when submitting directly to Amazon through a KDP account, they do allow a small portion to be made freely available online and if the author wishes to post portions of the book to their blog, they are welcome to do so while using Amazon directly. But they cannot do so while using our services to reach Amazon.
Unless the author has additional complaints, which we would encourage them to communicate to our support team directly, then the issue is resolved and the book is active and live on Amazon's site.

I have been a loyal faithful customer of this Business since around 2015. I have diligently improved myself and my products day after day. I would like to think I work very hard with my Small REMOVEDso I'm constantly creating new products and employing new marketing strategies such as AI.This company declared a "permanent probation" on my account today. I did not deserve this. I have been loyal to them. Furthermore, it's not a crime to use AI, which they say they oppose They did not REMOVEDme due process. They did not give me OFFICIAL warnings to improve. They did not give me a chance to stop this. I'm a REMOVEDso I don't have millions of dollars to hire translators, therefore AI enables me to get our empowering messages such as helping people with learning disabilities out to as many languages as possible. Americans who speak English are no more worthy than speakers of Thai, Malayalam, Filipino, Norwegian, Turkish, Romanian and other languages to get empowering self help materials for people with learning disabilities among other products. They are being too rigid. I am willing to negotiate a better solution. I am willing to negotiate, so they should too. I offer my free time to negotiate a solution that benefits all for this. They could at the least impose less severe sanctions like a week probation, but no they do the most draconian thing. They make mistakes everyday, yet people give them mercy, so they should also give others mercy.

    Complaint: REMOVED

I am rejecting this response because:

    1.  Draft2Digital does not have to take this drastic action of complete suspension.  I offer that I can cease the Publishing of AI related materials and still Publish my other works, if that works.

    2.  In this complaint, this is the fist time Draft2digital objected to the Publishing of Let's Use Free Speech to REMOVEDseems that Draft2Digital is looking for an ad hoc way to justify the spurious account suspension, as

Publishing AI material that many customers like is not grounds enough alone to warrant account suspension.

    3.  These AI translated works include self help material like 29 Ways to Succeed with Asperger's Syndrome which help people with learning disabilities who don't speak English as their mother tongue.

    4.  Let's Use Free Speech to REMOVEDis a tongue in cheek satire.  I regret I have to say that, yet any cursory look at this work would cause someone to conclude the material is satire.  Last I knew Draft2Digital allows Satire.

    5.  If this is the first major issue, which is essentially a non-issue, in my 8-9 years with Draft2Digital, all those years of faithfulness should count for something.

    6.  Small Publishers cannot afford to pay $100,000s for translators, so AI serves as a way to help the little guy.

    7.  Many major companies support the use of AI.

    Sincerely,

Our platform doesn't accept low-content, mass-produced material. We empathize with the challenges faced by small publishers and appreciate the role of AI in bridging language barriers, however none of the vendors we work with allow machine or AI translations as the results produced are not adequate for native speakers. If you are seeking to distribute low-content, mass-produced materials, and have other sites that allow this type of content,  we encourage you to explore these other platforms as they may better align with your publishing needs.
While many companies utilize AI technology, it's essential to recognize its limitations and potential risks, particularly in sensitive areas such as content creation and distribution. And as a reminder, we are limited by what our vendors will accept. None of our current vendors wish to receive low-content, mass-produced materials nor do they allow machine translations.

My account get terminated for Draft2Digital closed my account without any warning, leaving a sense of injustice and frustration. Without prior explanation, this action feels arbitrary and leaves a bitter taste. We would encourage complainant to review our Terms of Service as well as all of the communication sent to them outlining our Terms of Service, specifically the emails sent during account closure that states: Under our Terms of Service (TOS), since your account has been terminated you are prohibited from establishing a new account.

This was sent to them after their original account was closed on August 4, 2022.

The communication was sent again after the second account they opened on our site was closed on September 22, 2022.

The communication was sent again after the third account was closed on April 17, 2023. And a fourth time after their 4th attempt to open an account on our site was closed on March 18, 2024. As a reminder, any future accounts opened on our site will be closed as well, as we do not permit terminated accounts from establishing a new account.

I am writing in response to your inquiry regarding the decision made by Draft2Digital to terminate our working relationship with a client named REMOVED, whose account was initially opened on June 13,2023, and terminated on September 18, 2023.  The client was notified in writing that the tax details and banking information provided was incomplete on July 13, 2023. The client immediately started sending threatening emails that threatened to harm or kill our employees, and the decision was quickly made to terminate the account.
Attempts were made to issue a final payment to this client, however the clients bank rejected the payment due to missing bank details. Before we could notify the client of the issue of missing banking details, typically an easy problem to solve, the client sent multiple emails threatening to attack our families and kill our staff.

Due to the conduct of the account holder, we shut down all communication with this client and permanently closed the account. The communications from this individual were highly inappropriate and threatening. These communications included explicit threats of physical violence against our employees and their families.

Given the severity and nature of these threats,Draft2Digital made the decision not to pursue any further engagement with this individual. The safety and well-being of our employees are of utmost importance, and we have a zero-tolerance policy for such threatening and abusive behavior.
