My BCBS insurance includes 2 free routine cleanings a year w/$30 copay. In August 2022 my daughter went to Legacy for a cleaning and was later billed $124 because x-rays were not covered, despite it had always been covered the 20+ years we had been going there. I called BCBS and was told code D0274 (bitewings 4 radiograph images) is no longer elibible for payment but code D0210 (intra-oral complete series of radiographic images) which does include bitewings, is payable. On December 6, 2022, I came to Legacy for my cleaning and specifically told the hygienist when she started taking x-rays to make sure it's the correct x-ray series that is covered by my insurance and the hygienist said okay. After that visit, in which I did not get a cleaning by the way, I was billed $74 for x-rays. BCBS said Legacy again turned in a claim for D0274. I asked for my x-rays and there were 8 images, not sure if they took extra images of the bitewings or if she did a complete intra-oral series, but I feel cheated. The dental office should know which services are covered by insurance and which are not, it's their job, they file insurance claims everyday, and if it will not be covered they owed the patient a duty to tell us in advance there is an additional charge and we have to agree to it, not tell us after the fact. They have a duty to be transparent, not bait and switch by saying a service is covered by the insurance and then later bill the patient for it. Had they told me that taking bitewings will not be covered by BCBS but a complete x-ray series would be covered then I would have opted for the complete series instead, or refuse x-rays altogether. They didn't give me a choice. Possibly because they can charge the patient $81 for x-rays which is more than the $65 they would have gotten from BCBS for a code D0210 insurance claim. I don't think my daughter or I should have to pay for the x-ray charges because of Legacy Dental's lack of transparency and misleading tactics.
