In June 2022 we received a quote to have our front steps redone, under the impression that it would be a complete rebuild of the steps. The company asked for an initial 50% deposit for the company to put us on the work list, which we paid. The project was continuously delayed and when workers finally did show up as we were leaving for work, the workers asked us what needed to be done because it appears the workers had only part of the plan. We told them that our expectation was the entire front steps being torn out and rebuilt. The worker was confused and called the office and came back and said it was only a partial rebuild. We asked to talk with the owner prior to moving forward and turned the workers away. In the following weeks we were in contact with the owner through text messages, occasional phone calls, and emails. We asked him to come out to discuss in person, which he never did. We were told that materials were already purchased for the project, but when we asked for pictures or to bring by samples, they never showed us anything. We decided that there were too many issues with communication, and we were not comfortable moving forward with the project without seeing the materials that would be used (i.e., what the final product would look like). The company then told us that the deposit was nonrefundable, although no indication of such language was made during the initial meeting nor is there any such language in the signed quote. The company said the project could not be refunded because of the purchased materials and because other jobs "were turned down." In the final email communication from the owner (on Aug 24), he said "I will try to find a solution for both of us. Our policies are in place to ensure the highest quality, standards, and values that our company believes in." We have never heard from them again and our project is undone. We are looking for a refund of our deposit, ideally in full.
