On 03-15 I contacted Ohio Refrigeration for a repair on a refrigerator. Once they arrived, within 3 minutes they informed my husband and I that we needed a new starter (with the part in hand). We asked the price of the service in full and he informed us that with labor it would be $479 plus tax. Sensing something was off, my husband asked if we could simply buy that part ourselves for installation to save money. The employee then said you can’t go into any store and buy this part without an hvac license. Still sensing something being off, my husband and I took a moment to think if we should move forward with such a repair. Based on the information provided by the employee, we were under the impression that it was impossible to obtain a starter without an hvac license (if there even is such thing), so we felt we had no other option but to move forward with the repair (besides replacing the entire refrigerator, of course). While the employee who had lied regarding the replacement part was working behind the fridge, the other employee gestured my husband to the trash - pointing secretively with arms still crossed and mouthing, “in there.” My husband got the wrapping for the starter part out of the trash and with a quick google search found that the part was available for purchase on ****** (and many part stores) for only $13 - no license required. My husband inquired about the previous statement regarding obtaining the product and the employee acted shocked like he could not believe their availability. The other employee again gestured to my husband and they walked into the garage together where he proceeded to profusely apologize about his partner, stating that he was an honest man of his word claiming that is why he didn’t say anything when they were discussing the part earlier. They finished the repair & we reached out to the owner who gave no resolution. He said that the entire situation was our misunderstanding as opposed to a lie forcing us into a $511.33 sale.
