BYOH came to Rochester approx. a year ago with Jake H********* as the "builder" aka- salesman that presented himself as being a builder. Jake is an AMAZING salesman- as I like to say Jake could sell you a new mother; but in the end Jake and BYOH cares about themselves and their money more than any client they could ever encounter. My husband and I met with Jake who initially budgeted the house we were considering building. Little did my husband and I know, there was already someone who makes budgets as well as an actual builder they contracted out for Rochester who were already hired and QUALIFIED to make budgets. Jake is not qualified to make a budget for a home as he is a salesman and NOT a builder/foreman or contractor. Our house was GROSSLY under-budgeted all the way down to not even being budgeted for a gas line AT ALL. Jake sells that the company is "full disclosure" and that we would have access to our budget as we went and if we "behaved" we would be on target. about 2 months in I had to call for COUNTLESS hours and MONTHS of our build the VP in Syracuse to crunch my numbers in an excel spreadsheet because nobody knew where we were financially. 2 months in after months of demands we learned we were 34k over budget without ever being told. that very same day Jake was having my floors ordered (which I never received a quote for) which would've been 4k over budget; which I promptly STOPPED. I didn't even know who my builder was until 2 months into build; along with the fact my builders assistant was the one who could've been helping me with all my selections instead of doing it myself. Jake makes a sale, then disappears to the next sale while his customers are left to figure it out. Jake also installed windows in my bathroom that weren't up to code and when called out on it replied "how did the town even find out? I was just going to say that they were tempered." WOW...I also received an email from the director of finance from my town that said that Jake and Brandon saying their wire transfer for my C of O didn't go through because of "wrong routing number" was false and they were unable to get any return calls from Jake or BYOH regarding this. thankfully since Jakes original awful contract was altered by my attorneys I was able to settle with BYOH for my absolute CAP on what my family could afford (husband and 2 kids under 5). I had tried to just get a credit for an extra 5k so my family could maybe get light bulbs and some mirrors but they apparently "couldn't go any higher." meanwhile their VP even offered to pay me the 5k that the Brandon the president "couldn't do" out of the kindness of her heart. I also learned during the end of all of this that their VP who helped me, their CFO and our builder all resigned. In order to work for BYOH it requires a moral compass that does not point due north or have any ethical bone in your body; as evidenced by everyone in their company resigning once BYOH came to Rochester and they saw for themselves the lives being taken advantage of and ruined. We were fortunate for our contract, and in reality could still go to court for our entire house based off contract breach and damages. This company has destroyed 5 families lives so far in Rochester this year (mine included), and should not be allowed to build a house or even SELL a house in this area. the fact that a VP offered to pay me 5k of her own pocket because BYOH was unwilling and the fact that she left, the CFO left and the builder left all within a year- speaks volumes. I will never recommend this company to even my worst enemy. I hope people see this and spread the word to avoid this company if they want to keep their families and their money SAFE. We were lucky to just get one nostril above water with this company, but hopefully this reaches people who can build with someone reputable so the damage stops here and now.
