I had a procedure done in a medical facility in March of 2022. I was recently billed for a $50 copay!?

************ was seen in March 2022 as he states, however his insurance company partially denied the claim due to downgrading the ** level, one level down from the level billed. In general, the review and appeal process for these underpaid, partially denied claims can take some time and cause a delay in billing to the patient. The $50 is the original co-pay applied to the patient per the *** from the insurance company.

This medical billing company failed to bill my insurance within the claim filing time period. They waited a year to file an additional claim for an ER visit I had and are now trying to get that money from me. My insurance told me that they would not be paying because the company waited too long to put in the claim.

    Business Response

    Date: 12/27/2023

    Good afternoon,

I do show health insurance was billed timely however insurance stated they did not receive the claim. The rebilled claim was denied timely in which we will appeal. That being said, I have adjusted the account balance to $0.00 so no letters will be sent in regard to this account. Please feel free to contact me directly at the business office if anything else is needed, ************.

    Sincerely,

My dad was a patient at ******** Regional Hospital from 10/31/22-11/04/22. We received a bill ******** Number *********, Date **/6/*** from the ******** in amount of $1,556.00 on 12/17/22, due on 12/21/22. Since my dad was in the nursing home at the time, I paid the bill on 12/17/22. After I paid the bill, I received an explanation of benefits (EOB) from Anthem stating that they had paid $1,556.00, and I owed nothing. On 12/29/22, while I was in the nursing home and I called the medical ****** for ********, UHS Western Region CBO, *********, and they told my dad and I that they would refund the money in two to three weeks. After no refund, I filled a complaint with the ********************* of ******************** They referred my complaint to Anthem, who contacted UHS. According to a letter from Anthem, dated 2/17/23, UHS promised to pay within two weeks. My dad died on 2/23/23. I called UHS today (3/28/23) to collect the money due, they said they would no longer pay because I lacked a copy of his will. They refused to talk to my mother/his widow. Given the history, I believe this company refuses to refund the money. I believed I was tricked by ******** into paying this bill by being pressured by the immediate due date on the bill. I trusted ******** that they were billing the correct amount and done due diligence collecting from Anthem. Had I seen the **** I would have questioned the bill and never paid it. I understand it is common practice for hospitals to return overpayments immediately, especially in the case of ******** payment because there are large penalties and long jail sentences. In my case, because I am not an insurance company or ********, I believe they think they can take the money. This is fraud.

    Better Business Bureau:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.  They also paid interest on the amount refunded.  I would like to say that a business like this, A NATIONWIDE HOSPITAL CORPORATION THAT MAKES BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, should be more responsible and honest.  I felt like they had no intention of refunding this money unless I complained and complained.  I believe they try to take advantage of their patients who do not read their EOBs or wait for their EOBs.  Maybe this is common practice in this industry.  But, there is no excuse for this kind of behavior, especially when people do not have a lot of money (maybe they had to borrow money) to pay medical bills, and a criminal demand like this is made.

I wish my dad was still alive to see I got his money back.

Thank you BBB for helping.  I would have never gotten this money back without you.

    Sincerely,
