Above All Roofing LLC (AAR) years after the project is completed, requests payment with late fees, anticipating that the elderly home owner has lost/misplaced/tossed all the related paperwork, which results in getting the elderly home owner confused and then the homeowner paying more than the original quoted amount in the roofing contract. Why I think this might be a scam: My mother, lives in Kure Beach, NC. In February 2019 she had her roof replaced by AAR for a contract amount of $9,500. She paid AAR $9,000 with four checks within a month after completion of the roof. She thought she had paid the complete bill with the fourth check. In 2019 my mom was 88 years old. This past March (2022) she received an invoice from AAR for $7,947.18 with $4,750.00 of that amount for the final roof payment and $3,197.18 in late fees. There was no correspondence from AAR after she gave them the fourth check until this past March. AAR called after sending the invoice and required that she provide proof that all the checks were cashed before they would reprocess the invoice. My mom only remembered the first three checks and provided proof from the bank that the first three checks (for a total amount of $7,000) were cashed. This May I came to visit my mother and she paid AAR the remaining $1,500 and they were satisfied and did not require any late fee payment. A few days after the $1,500 check was cashed by AAR I found that there was the fourth check for $1,000 made out to and cashed by AAR in March, 2019. She really only owed AAR $500. Since that time we have been requesting AAR for return of the $1,000 overpayment. AAR corresponded with us for the first week after the May check was cashed but since then they have not returned phone calls, text messages, or emails. She would like the $1,000 overpayment returned and this scheme not happen to anyone else in the future. Further documents and information can be provided if necessary.
