I have paid **** Meloy nearly $70,000 to build a 45'x45' garage with 14' walls, 12x12 garage doors, widows, walk in door, metal siding, and a concrete cape in front. I gave him a $61,550 check on 10/8/22, plus other money for discrepancies, as it went along. By mid December, photos show three sides, fully framed, with trusses set. In spite of good weather, he essentially stopped working on it, at the end of December, admittedly, by him, to work on someone else's job. It mostly sat for approximately 1 1/2 months. In that time he put on 1/2 the roof, most of the soffit, and one side, (essentially, creating a big wind trap, like a kite or a parachute, as my trusses and framing were turning black from weather exposure. I let him know that I was not happy. Sometime between 2/20/23 and 2/23/23, the garage fell over, due to his poor work practices and neglect. It should have been done, long before it fell. We got some rain on 2/22/23. It was not a severe weather event, which is well documented. When I told ****, he immediately removed all his tools and machinery, when he knew I was not there. He claimed wind storm, straight line winds, and act of God, saying that I was 100% responsible and that he was 100% in the clear. He said I would have to pay 100% of cost of him fixing it. I told him to give me figures. He would not do it and told me to hire someone else. Details: His bracing consisted of 1x2 and 2x2 boards driven 10 inches or less into a rock/dirt fill mix, that he dumped, which got soft when it rained, with single screws into attaching brace boards. Wall anchors were 1/4" concrete screws that just pulled out. Other issues: in spite of verbal and written job specs, he did not put rebar into the concrete, as required, and framed for the wrong sized windows. He has been paid for unfinished labor and concrete, garage doors, and materials that I have not received, and everything is sitting, on the ground, exposed to the weather. I have photo documentation of everything.
