On November 29, 2022, BBBServing Eastern Michigan and Upper Peninsula contacted So Power Solar torequest that they substantiate, modify, or discontinue specific advertisingclaims found on the business’ website.
The website advertises “lower monthly bills", "improved electricity efficiency", "higher equity", "your home can be significantly enhanced in terms of value”, "increased sustainability”, "regardless of the slope, angle, orheight of your roof, they are built to provide year-round solar production.", "lower emissions.”, “once installed, it generates 100% renewable energyfor your home. It’s a massive reduction in CO2 emissions.", "Lowest Price for Solar Energy", and “you pay off the investment ata lower price than your current electricity bill."
BBB further requested the business clarify statements about the “upfront” or “initial” costs. The website states, "After the one-off initial payment" and "In most cases, the upfront cost of a solar power system installation is zero.
According to the BBB Code of Advertising, “Advertisers have a responsibility to have substantiation for all claims made and should be able to provide that substantiation upon request. All advertising that may mislead or deceive consumers should be avoided.” BBB Code of Advertising Section 34. Claimed Results states, "Claims relating to performance, energy savings,safety, efficacy or results for a product or service should be based on recentand competent testing or other objective data.” Section 36. Environmental Benefits states, in part, that "Advertisers must possess competent and reliable evidence to support environmental benefit claims."
In addition, BBB requested the businessadd disclosures to “25-year bumper-to-bumper warranty” to comply with BBB Codeof Advertising Section 20. Warranties/Guarantees, which states “When using the term “warranty” or “guarantee” in product advertising, the advertiser must clearly and conspicuously include a statement that the complete details of the warranty can be seen prior to sale”.
As of December 29, 2022, the business has failed to respond to BBB requests.
