    On Thursday, July 20, 2023 I was a patient at Southwest Michigan Dermatology for the removal of a small 1.7cm sized cyst on the back of my scalp. The doctor had explained the procedure to me (I would get a numbing shot, the cyst would be cut open and removed, and then stitched back up). I agreed to this and that was what was done. Weeks after the surgery, I was at the office for an unrelated visit, and they asked if I would like to pay my bill. The bill was $700 which was an excessive amount for this type of procedure (after insurance) and especially for a cyst this small. I later called and asked why it was so expensive and they claimed I needed "skin repair" during the surgery which somehow equates to roughly a $500 extra charge and was not something the Dr. verbally covered, mentioned, nor did I agree to getting, I then had asked for an itemized bill because I want to see specifically why they are charging so much. I had a cyst removed on the back of my neck at another location that was larger and I had only paid $170, compared to the $700 for this. They said they would mail me a bill in the mail. On 8/21/2023 I got a letter from them, that was purely only visit information that the doctor had typed up. No bill, no mention of charges. It's my understanding that it's Michigan state Law to provide me an itemized bill if I request one within reason. The lady over the phone even had agreed to mail me one but instead I got a passive aggressive visit information note where the lady highlighted a section of the procedure, but nothing with bill statements. I would like the bill to be adjusted and to actually get a itemized bill. As of now, I still can't even see my bill let alone pay it because they have not sent me one.

    First off, the doctors we have seen are great. Last year, I went to the office and was told my insurance was accepted and then post appointment was told it was not and had to pay. Not happy, but I did it. Then I received a gift card 2 days later because of overpayment because my insurance DID pay.This year, I asked at scheduling if my insurance was accepted. I was told yes. I even paid both my copay and my son's at checkout (son had appointment at another office later in day). I was told insurance was good. 2 weeks later I receive a bill, due within 1 week, with no insurance on it. I call and was told they "don't" like to use my insurance which I questioned more and then was told "well, they just take a while to pay so..." So I DO have insurance they take, my military insurance just takes a bit to process and not on THEIR timeline that I have to pay all up front and then await my insurance to pay to then me reimbursed. Absolutely NOT! She told me to call my insurance and discuss with them when they would be paying it if I didn't feel that I should be paying the invoice in hand. Literally didn't even wait 30 days for insurance to process before billing me. I asked repeatedly before my appointment to avoid this c*** and was told I was good. My newest bill at least reflected my copay that the first one didn't, yet requiring payment within 1 week vs allowing my insurance to pay. This is unacceptable and ridiculous. The doctors have always been great but billing has been a nightmare and unacceptable from the start. I HAVE insurance and have been told I was good. Why, post appointment, does the story vary?
