I am writing to complain about a recent repair I had at Colonial Volkswagen Medford. I came in because my air conditioning stopped working. I was told it was $300 to run a diagnostic test, which I paid. I was then told that the car was just low on freon, but to be sure, they put a dye in the system in case there was a leak. 2 days later the problem was back and again, there was no coolant. I was told then that there was leak was in the compressor setting me back an additional $2k. (Note: the car is 6 years old with less than 35K miles on it.) 2 days later, though, the same problem. This time, I was told the fault was now the condenser. I argued that I was sure it was a leak in the system. I also could not believe that both the compressor and condenser would go at the same time. After the dealers insistence that the problem was the condenser, I then paid roughly another $1k, and, again, 2 days later the problem reoccurred. At this point, I felt like I was being scammed so I also started looking at how much I was being charged for parts. Aside from the compressor I was overcharged for all the other parts, including the washers. For the compressor, for instance, I paid $722.30 for the same compressor listed in their parts store for $575.28. When I took the car back AGAIN, I was then told what I always suspected that there was a leak. At this point, I asked to speak to the manager who tried to tell me that they buy the parts somewhere other than the parts store right across the hall from where he was telling me this. The manager then offered to pay for the leak for free (which finally solved the problem). However, as I had already paid $300 for a useless diagnostic test, was overcharged for parts, paid $3K in repairs I likely never needed, and repairing a leak would have been a fraction of what I had paid at this point, it was certainly not free.
