I took my 2012 Dodge Avenger SXT (2.4L) to Gerber Collision & Glass for collision repair on October 2, 2025. I paid $1,200 for the repairs, which included fixing the driver-side fender and paint matching the top. I picked the vehicle up on Friday, October 17, 2025. It started once when I left the shop, but when I got home and tried to start it again, it would not start at all. I called Gerber that same day and was told they had not touched any wiring during the repair.

I first tried to jump the battery, but it still would not start. I then replaced the starter, and it still wouldn’t crank. While checking the fuses, I noticed that every time I installed a new fuse in the ignition fuse slot, it would immediately pop. I removed the airbox to inspect further and discovered that Gerber had grounded the alternator wire under a bolt to the chassis, creating a direct electrical short. This caused the wiring to smoke heavily, nearly starting a fire, and melted part of the alternator wire along with a fuse inside the ignition fuse slot.

On Monday, October 20, 2025, I called again and spoke with a representative who stated that Gerber “did not remove the airbox” and that they “kept it cost-friendly.” However, the grounded alternator wire is located directly beneath the airbox, meaning that area must have been disturbed during the repair process.

I have photo and video documentation showing the grounded wire, smoke damage, and melted fuse. This clearly indicates negligent electrical work during the repair. The shop has refused to accept responsibility or provide any compensation for the damage and safety hazard they created.

I am requesting reimbursement for the electrical inspection and repair costs (estimated at $400–$700) required to restore the vehicle to a safe operating condition. I have given Gerber Collision & Glass multiple opportunities to resolve this directly, but they continue to deny fault.

During the repair on this vehicle we did not disconnect any wiring other than unplugging the headlight for replacement. The wire in question that was grounded improperly was under the air box which we did not take off the vehicle for the repairs we completed. I explained to the customer it could have been caused by the aftermarket wiring he has installed all throughout the engine bay, as it is not factory and could have caused these issues.

    Complaint: ********

I am rejecting the business’s response because their statement is not accurate. While my alternator is aftermarket, the wiring was correctly done prior to bringing the vehicle in. I personally ran the alternator power wire directly to the fuse box. It was never grounded to the chassis before the vehicle was in this business’s possession.

When I picked the vehicle up from the shop, there was now a check engine light on, which was not present before, and my underglow wiring had been unplugged without explanation.

    Sincerely,

We did not remove the airbox for any reason and the ground is under the air box. We will not be covering. I would suggest the customer take it back to whom ever did the wiring.
