August 26th, I had one of the worse customer experiences of my entire life at Quills Coffee on the Canal in Indianapolis, where I have frequently gone since the first time I moved to Indianapolis in 2017 and frequently made trips to when I was back in town to visit Indianapolis. I came in for went up to the bar to order something. I will admit up front that I was coughing due to getting over a sinus infection and due to seasonal allergies. I was told by this Male Barrista (I'm guessing in his 20s, with tattoos up and down his right arm and glasses and dark hair) that if I was "going to be cough everywhere, if I could please put a mask on." To which I said "Oh yes absolutely" (I didn't have my mask with me at that moment as it was in the car) so I covered my mouth with my shirt. Then sometime later while I was sitting at my table all by myself with no one around me while I was working on a quiz for one of my classes, I coughed a few times and was told by the same barrista, "Hey you need to put a mask on if you're going to cough, you're disrespecting our customers." Puzzled as to how I was supposedly disrespecting their customers, I turned to him and told him that I was coughing because I have a tickle in my throat due to a sinus infection that I am getting over as well as allergies and that I am vaccinated and I am also sitting down in my seat, which every coffee shop and restaurant I know if during the pandemic, even during mask mandates, allows customers to not wear masks when they are sitting down eating/drinking. He told me that I would have to wear a mask if I continued to cough like that. I shrugged and went back to what I was doing and I did comply with his request. A few minutes later I got up to go to the bathroom (with my mask now on) so that I could cough in private. After I was done I washed my hands and walked out of the bathroom. Sometime later, this same punk barrista walked past my table and whispered to me that "he was going to give me one more chance or he was going to kick me out." Thinking that he was still refering to me coughing (which I had not even done since coming back from the bathroom), I said "excuse me, I wasn't even coughing. Is there a problem?" He said yeah, you went in the bathroom and made a mess." Perplexed, I said "what are you talking about.?" He said you're disrespecting our customers?" I said, "What did I do?" He said "Do you want to stay here?" I said, "what are you talking about? Make a mess in the bathroom? What?" He said "Alight man." After I finished with what I was doing, I got up and walked over to him and said "I want the name and number of your manager and your name as well." He complied in giving me the name and number of the manager, but would not give me his name. I told him what he accused me of in the bathroom was inappropriate (I knew that I had not in fact made any kind of mess in the bathroom). He told me that I had made a mess in the bathroom everyday this week (which is impossible since I have not been in at all this week due to being at work all day and in class all evening this week). When I asked what he was even referring to he said, he said " you know what you did in there" and told me that I was not welcome back." After I finished writing down the number of his manager, he told me not to ever come back." After calling his manager, "Justin," and letting him know what had just happened, his manager returned my call and said that I had gone into the bathroom multiple times this week and left "some water" on the counter of the sink after I had washed my hands." Apparently, coughing and leaving water on the sink counter will get your banned from Quills Coffee in Indy. I have worked in customer service for many years of my life and I know what would have happened if I had ever accussed a customer of something like this. Not to mention that In all my years of customer service, I have cleaned up countless "messes" of customers in the bathroom and I can't imagine ever threatening to ban a customer because they left "some water" on the sink counter (especially when I hadn't even been there all week to do such a thing as he insisted I did." Its also really sad that the manager "Justin" employs such emotionally immature and punk baristas and allows them to treat his customers this way and defends their actions when they do so. This business needs to be reprimanded for how they treat their customers.
