  I paid $50 for an academic assessment for my third-grade daughter at Sylvan Learning, Plainfield on 08/13/25. The results contradicted her state test scores. Immediately afterward, I was pressured by a sales associate into purchasing 52 tutoring sessions for around $3,000, with the assurance that if my daughter did not like the program, he would do everything possible to make it work. He did not review or disclose the refund ********* the first session, my daughter reported the material was far too easy and not suitable for her needs. I decided to discontinue services and requested a refund. At that time, I was told there was no refund policy, even though another staff member later showed me a policy I had signed but was never explained during the sales process.I followed up multiple times, including by phone, in person, and by email. After several days, the original associate called and again insisted there was no refund and that I would not receive my money back.This company misrepresented its services and failed to disclose its refund policy clearly. I am requesting a full refund of $3,000 for services not rendered as promised.

  At Sylvan, we strive to provide families with high-quality academic support and a clear understanding of our programs, services, and policies prior to enrollment. Our assessments are designed to provide insight into a student's academic standing and are based on nationally normed benchmarks. While we respect that a parent may compare these results to other academic measures such as state tests, our assessments may serve a different diagnostic purpose. We also want to clarify that when the concern about subject matter was shared by the parent, we did make it clear that we were willing to immediately adjust the subject area if that was the preference. Based on further conversation, we did make that adjustment and that is what is currently being worked on by the child during the Sylvan *********** part of our enrollment process, all clients are presented with and sign our center policies which specifically state that our programs are non-refundable. We understand that educational services are an important investment, which is why we provide upfront transparency regarding our program structure and policies as well as ongoing consistent communication. We remain committed to serving our community with integrity and welcome further discussion as needed throughout the time at Sylvan.
