1 starI contacted The Grout Medic for an in-person estimate to address yellowing caulk at a newly installed kitchen backsplash/countertop joint.During the site visit, the technician explained that he would not have used clear silicone at that location, stated that clear silicone can yellow when exposed to moisture, and indicated that the discoloration observed was consistent with a wet, visible joint sealed with clear silicone.After the visit, I spoke directly with the owner (REMOVED). During that conversation:He stated that he had no way of knowing what caused the yellowing, despite the explanation provided by his own technician.He asserted that clear silicone is acceptable and that using color-matched silicone is merely personal preference.He explicitly stated that he would not put anything in writing that could be used against another contractor or against himself, and declined to document even the observed condition (yellowing caulk) or the reason replacement was being REMOVEDbe clear, I was not asking for fault assignment, legal conclusions, or condemnation of another contractor. I asked only for consistency between the technicians on-site explanation and the owners position, and for basic documentation of what was visibly present.The contradiction between the technicians assessment and the owners refusal to acknowledge or document it made it impossible to proceed. No work was performed.Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this business for corrective work or for situations where material performance, transparency, or documentation are important.

We appreciate the opportunity to clarify several points, as there appears to be a misunderstanding regarding both the site discussion and our follow-up conversation.During the in-home estimate, our technician does not recall saying that clear silicone should not be used in wet areas or that the caulk yellowed because it was exposed to moisture. Furthermore, he would not say that because that conclusion would be factually incorrect and is not something our company would represent. The vast majority of silicone caulkincluding clear siliconeis specifically designed for use in wet environments and is the preferred and often required material for movement joints and angled seams in kitchens, bathrooms, and other wet areas. This is a product we use regularly. The technician who completed the visit has worked with The Grout Medic since at least 2010 and has extensive experience performing and evaluating these types of projects and so he knows these facts very REMOVEDmy subsequent conversation with the customer, I learned that the caulk in question appeared to be part of a relatively recent installation, and that the customers questions and requests for written documentation strongly suggested an expectation that the previous contractor had used an improper material or otherwise failed in the installation, resulting in the yellowing she was seeing. While we understand the frustration of experiencing an issue so soon after a project is completed, it is not professionally appropriate for us to speculate on causation or assign responsibility without direct knowledge of the installation methods, materials used, or job conditions. Based on the nature of the requests and the overall tone of the conversation, it appeared that the customer was seeking documentation that could be used to support a complaint or claim against the prior contractor, which we were not comfortable providing for several reasons, that included not wanting to become a party to this customer's possible dispute with her prior contractor.Additionally, there is no professional reason for us to document speculative conclusions regarding why a condition exists within a proposal for corrective work. Our proposals are intended to clearly communicate what we observe, what work we recommend, and how we propose to correct the issue. They are not intended to investigate or comment on the actions of other contractors, particularly when we have no insight into the original installation details or the specific materials that were REMOVEDclarify further, clear silicone caulk is an acceptable and commonly used product in situations like this. While we typically recommend color-matched silicone for aesthetic reasonssince clear caulk can highlight seams and gapsthis is a preference decision rather than a requirement or performance REMOVEDwork was performed by us because the customer requested documentation that went beyond what we could responsibly provide without certainty. Based on the comments made, I ultimately told the customer that we would not be comfortable with what she was requesting and that we were not the contractor for her project. We strive to be honest, ethical, and careful in our assessments, particularly when our statements could impact third parties.We regret that this resulted in frustration for this customer and appreciate the opportunity to clarify our approach for future customers.Review fromJohn O

5 starsI had asked for recommendations for caulk, tub and tile cleaning. I ended up using The Grout Medic of West/Southwest Chicagoland. My experience with The Grout Medic of West/Southwest Chicagoland was fantastic. The owner came out and explained all of the different processes, what he recommended, and provided a quote. I called the owner a few times with more questions and my calls were answered or returned promptly. I had caulk replaced, tile cleaned and sealed. I also had the no slip areas and tub cleaned which had stains that I was unable to get out. REMOVEDwas the technician and he gave me a lot of information and did a spectacular job. I was truly amazed at how clean everything was. The tub and shower look new again. I will definitely use them again for any of my tile needs, and I highly recommend them. 5 starsWe were very pleased with the work REMOVEDdid in cleaning and resealing the grout on both the bathroom floor and the shower. He also did a clean job on caulking the kitchen and bathroom countertop. However, the caulk appeared milky white against our dark granite countertop. We asked REMOVEDto look at it; so, he had REMOVEDreturn to redo the caulking in those areas with a more clear caulk. The result is a lot better -- not totally clear, but I suppose that's the nature of caulking a dark countertop.We appreciated REMOVED's responsiveness to the concern and his willingness to have REMOVEDreturn to redo the caulking.
