- Advertising Review:
BBB promotes truth in advertising by contacting advertisers whose claims conflict with the BBB Code of Advertising. These claims may come to our attention from our internal review of advertising, consumer complaints and competitor challenges. BBB asks advertisers to prove their claims, change ads to make offers more clear to consumers, and remove misleading or deceptive statements.
On 12/1/2023, the BBB reviewed a letter being issued out to consumers specifically business owners. The letter is being sent from IL Certificate Service. The business claims to represent The State Of Illinois: Secretary of State Department which also claims the Illinois Certificate is issued through them and "may be required for loans, to renew business licenses or for tax purposes." BBB asked the business to substantiate these claims as advertised as required by BBB’s Code of Advertising.
The business advertised the following product on their letters:
Printed Documented letter:
“Congratulations on registering your business with thestate of Illinois. Your Articles have been filed with the secretary of Stateand are complete. You have one step left in order to attain your elective IllinoisCertificate of Status. Below is a form for your newly registered business.”
