I hired 2nd City Craftsmen and Construction to remodel a shower in my basement. The work included installation of new wall board, waterproofing, shower pan and drain, wall and floor tile, shower door and shower valve. After the work was finished, I found numerous defects in the construction, some of which were aesthetic (inconsistent grout joints, chipped tiles at the cut edge, lippage on the wall tiles, shower door handle installed upside down), and others which were functional (incomplete grout on the floor, incomplete setting bed under the shower door threshold, lack of sealant between the top of the curb and the underside of the threshold.) 2nd City corrected the issues that could be fixed without a total redo and we negotiated a cost reduction for the issues that would remain. However, after about a week of use, the worst problem surfaced: an incorrectly-installed shower pan/drain that completely failed, leaving a depression in the floor, a large 'spongy' area and cracked grout between the floor tiles. In the end, I determined that the entire shower pan would have to be removed and replaced to correct the problem. Because the wall tiles were set on top of the shower pan, some of the wall tile would also have to be removed. In the end, because of all of the aesthetic issues with the wall tile, and the fact that I would had to have removed at least the bottom course of tile, I ended up demolishing all of the work that 2nd City had done and redoing the work myself. In fairness, I do have to acknowledge that 2nd City did refund all the money I paid them, but I was left with a non-functioning shower, I was out-of-pocket for the floor and wall tile that was originally installed (I purchased the tile separate from 2nd City's contract), I had to demolish all of the work that had been done and then had to rebuild the entire shower myself. When I did demolish the shower I found several issues with the construction that would have failed in pretty short order: lack of waterproofing transitions at all inside corners, incomplete setting bed under the threshold (even after this was supposed to be fixed) and removal of the insulation inside the one shower wall that's an exterior building wall. I am not able to give zero stars, so 2nd City gets only one star and I urge you not to hire them for this kind of work.
