These grates are made from 14-gauge solid steel and are custom-designed for the particular air conditioner so that they fit perfectly. They are made with no screws, hinges, or swinging gates, making them harder to be removed by vandals, and the lock and keyhole are secured by a steel enclosure to prevent destruction of the lock. However, they can be easily removed for cleaning or regular maintenance of the unit, and do not have to be completely disassembled in order to be removed; they can be taken off in nearly one piece, maintaining their structural integrity.
