I paid $1,017.16 on 5/12/23 to Handyman Connection of Winter Park to install a sliding glass door. On 5/17/23, they installed the door. I asked Handyman Connection if the permit application was going to require an inspection to be scheduled later. Jihan from Handyman Connection answered, "Not at all. The craftsmen just confirmed it." I asked if the inspector went out today and that's why we didn't need to schedule the inspection for a future date or if they did not obtain a permit. I did not receive an answer. On 5/18/23, I reached out to Handyman Connection again and asked if I will need to schedule an inspection with the county for the door installation. Handyman Connection responded, "No you won't need to schedule an inspection appointment." Since my question was still unanswered, I asked if the inspection was already done by the county. Handyman Connection stated, "if you want an inspection done, there's going to be an additional fee." This is the first time that I hear about there being an additional fee for installation in compliance with the Florida Building Code. I asked if the county requires an inspection for the permit for the installation of the sliding glass door. Handyman Connection, responded "did you pull a permit?" When I have installed doors, windows, and A/C units in the past, the installer pulls the permit and schedules the inspection with the county. Handyman Connection responded that homeowners can pull their own permits. They tried to charge me an additional $575 to pull a permit. The 2020 Florida Building Code requires a permit for installing sliding glass doors. I am asking Handyman Connection to comply with Florida law by pulling the permit for the sliding glass door installation. They must certify that they installed the door correctly to Orange County by pulling a permit. Without a permit, Handyman Connection is in violation of the building code and I could be fined by the county.
