I hired this contractor based on a trusted referral. I am at fault to the extent that I did not research the owner of this company adequately nor was I able to get additional quotes for the job as there was some urgency to getting the work completed. My bad. Don't make the same mistakes I did. Get additional quotes, research your contractor.
Where to start... this was a, roughly, 2000 sq foot siding job. Installing Hardie Board siding. Upon inspecting the first side of the house they completed I realized that they were blind nailing the siding. An accepted installation technique for this material but I live in FL. I get hurricanes. As such, Hardie suggests face nailing in high wind areas. When I brought this up I was told by the contractor I do not live in a high wind area. We get hurricanes, enough said. I insisted on face nailing and he agreed, this was also to match the front of the house that had already had face nailed Hardie installed prior.
On to the second section they did: They decided to double nail this wall which Hardie suggest be used only when repairing existing Hardie board damage. The installer was having nails hit blind nails and creating large holes in the surface of the exposed material. Further they were sinking the nails well below the surface of the face of the siding. Not acceptable, and I am sure that every blind nail on the first wall was also sunk too far. It quickly became clear that this contractor and his crew did not know how to properly install this material. When the double nailing issue was brought up with the contractor he told me that if he were to have a Hardie representative inspect his work I would be told that it was being installed right. The Hardie representative would have to completely contradict the installation procedures clearly described on the Hardie web site to tell me this was being installed properly. I told the contractor that sounded unlikely. To which he replied "more nails is better". Not the case. Doing the job right is better.
I could go on and on... seams of the siding not matching up from one wall to the other, size of the board installed completely different size and does not match the front of the house, angles off, a good portion of the job installed by carpenter's helpers. And for every concern I raised this contractor had an answer that supported his and his crew's clear lack of expertise.
To top it off this contractor would not come walk the finished job with me. That is beyond comprehension for me and is cowardly. I stand behind my work and take responsibility when it is insufficient. Maybe that is too much to ask in this world. He did at one point offer to take 0.01% ($350) off the cost of the job ($21,000) so I guess there's that...
Buyer beware.
