On February 28th 2025 my girlfriend and I were going to ************* and were approached by two girls that were offering crunch memberships for 1 cent for a month. My girlfriend was 18 and I was 17. I am now 18. Apart from the predatory nature of advertising to highschoolers outside of a dunkin I was shocked by how big of an issue would come out of the situation. We were approached at my car and encouraged to join and eventually we both signed a contract on the tablet they provided with an online signup. Me and her werent even able to go once as we were entering into exam season at school and had little to no free time. As time went on I started getting calls and emails about payments going through on my account. I went to my bank and put a stop payment on against Crunch Fitness. I had scoured online looking for a way to make a cancellation online and even called my location to ask if there was any way to cancel online but I was told that it could only be done in person. I started doing my research and found out that making me go in person was a violation of the ************************* click to cancel law in which it is in violation of section 5 of the *** Act for the Negative Option Seller to fail to provide a simple mechanism for a consumer to cancel the Negative Option Feature; avoid being Charged, or Charged an increased amount, for the good or service; and immediately stop any recurring Charges. I also searched up online crunch cancellation and I found one in the form of a ****** form which doesnt seem safe and secure especially when dealing with money and subscription cancellations. I searched for my location but couldnt find it which meant that I could not cancel online in any way. I am going away for college in august and have heard that some people continue to get charged even when they call for cancellation after they moved. Overall, its a sneaky and deceptive move made by crunch and I do not want to pay 150 for a place I never went to.Business Response

We have no member by this name or phone number in the system.
We do not have a process to sign people up in parking lots.
They would need to visit the club with proof of payment, contract, barcode, or something so we can research further.

I moved to ************ ******* and Crunch Fitness is not close to my new address as it was in *****. I went to the nearest Crunch Fitness and the manager on duty at the time said they could not cancel my membership. I had to do it online. I went online and online said they could not do it and to go to the fitness center. It is a Catch 22 making cancellation impossible. I sent a letter as a final attempt that was also ignored. They continue to bill me in spite of three separate attempts to cancel and only conflicting direction on how to cancel my membership. I would like all fees charged after the attached dated letter refunded to **** attached a notice from the website stating that it cannot be used to cancel and directing me to the fitness center. The fitness center directed me back to the website.I also attached the dated letter sent to Crunch Fitness after I moved to ************. It is the old Word document that was printed and mailed.Business Response

I had a contract with a gym that shut down without notice (Upload Fitness). I received 2 charges of $52.43 On May 15th and $52.43 June 15 from Crunch Fitness. After calling Crunch fitness on June 18th I was informed that the 'contract was sold to Crunch'. I did not sign an agreement to go to Crunch Fitness in ************. I only signed a monthly contract with Upload Fitness. In addition Upload fitness did not accept any phone calls as they were shut down. I want $104.86 refunded to me.Business Response

I am rejecting this response because I never signed up for crunch fitness. I was not given notice my contact would be going to crunch after the closure of my initial gym. I never agreed to receive services from Crunch.
Sincerely,

I am hoping that by writing this complaint the team at ************, ** would help me get the stain off my credit report and hopefully we won't have to cross paths ever again:Over the course of last year I've attempted to cancel the membership to Crunch Fitness in ************, ** multiple times. During the onboarding process the team told me that it was very easy to cancel, we just had to give them a 30 days notice and that was it. Which I did, or at least I believe I did, by sending an e-mail to the ***************** What was supposed to be a charge for 30 days became close to $200 and it was sent to a collections agency. These people were extremely rude on the phone and kept calling me 5-6 sometimes 10 times a day, the majority of the times I would attempt to pick up the phone they would just hang up. This was predatory and abusive. When I attempted to pay and end this madness, I requested a way to identify them, a phone number and an address before handling my credit card details, to which they hung up on me. They kept calling me over and over for months and each time I tried to pick up they would hang up.I believe there was a misrepresentation of the costs of the membership at the time of signing up as a member and that it is a predatory business practice. The Annual Maintenance Fee was not disclosed during the onboarding process after requesting clarification multiple times regarding additional / hidden charges / fees from the team. This morning I found my credit score had dropped 100+ points due to this mishandling. The company: "*********************" located in ********** sent my debt to collections for $170. I called them and paid my debt immediately, even though I believe it's unfair, illegal and predatory what they've done to me, I also believe there may have been a confusion between the parts and to be honest I don't care about the money, you may keep it, I just want the collections deleted from my credit report.Business Response

ACCOUNT #: ********* I can't understand how this gym sells a "month to month" no contract "no commitment" gym membership and when you stop going to this gym they keep charging you. It's impossible to cancel a membership. A simple phone call should due. I also tried to update my address to show the closest gym to me is 50miles away. But you have to go through loops to give updated information to no avail. To report me as owing over 350 dollars is a scam.. a month to month means exactly what it says. If you decide not to continue going to this gym you are not bound by a contract.. or any other illegal policy they decide to throw at you.. But you deceive your customers by not saying you are entering a contract. This is false advertising and a class action lawsuit will follow if this derogatory **** on my credit report is not removed promptly. This is disgusting business practice.Business Response

Good Morning,
Yes, our membership contract is for a month-to-month membership. This membership renes on the same day each month until a member gives 30-day notice to cancel the contract.

I am rejecting this response because:This business has used and still uses click and bait tatic. You did not address the other issues in my complaint. Let's be clear. Any reasonable person understands that a month to month, no commitment is a NON CONTRACT. My phone service is a month to month and when I stop paying there's no cancel fee or any other fee, why? Because there is no contract. When I asked your staff who signed me up specifically stated this is not a contract and you can stop coming anytime!!! You used a collection agency as a weapon to try and force me to pay for services not rendered. I'm once again requesting you right this wrong and removed these unjust credit report and charges ... unfortunately you have a marketing campaign that deceives people into signing up and baits them into a undisclosed contract.. remember there are laws!!!
Sincerely,

Good Morning,
A month to month membership by definition means month to month. You can cancel any time 30 day written notice.
There are multiple signatures and initials to explain the membership.
There were numerous numerous numerous attempts to address the past-due issues with no response from the member.
The collection company was a last resort after being 120 days past due with no response from this member.
If the member would have taken the time to respond to the multiple effort to solve the past-due or take the time now, to actually call the location and speak to a manager. We have systems in place to settle the account for what the member wouldve paid if they wouldve actually taken the time to fill out the cancel form and cancel the membership properly.Thank you,

I am rejecting this response because:When you write month to month it means month to month. NO CONTRACT!!! I attached photos which prove you guys bait and switch, false advertising and other deceitful tactics. I signed up to crunch fitness because of the month to month No contract no commitment!
Any signature or initials I was made to believe I was signing a liability waiver not a contract!!!
You guys are breaking many laws.. i will not stop until this is corrected and removed from my credit report. I do not owe you a *****. Requirement to cancel would mean we were in a contract and thats a lie. Terrible business practices. The photos attached show you bait and switch. This is not legal and action will be taken if not fixed immediately. This is extortion !!!
More complaints will follow with the AG'S OFFICE very soon if not fixed ..
I will not be taken advantage of and by the complaints I read you have done this to many people before. Instead of doing the right thing you cause a bigger problem.. when will you learn your lesson?
