Since the end of June 2023, my wife has requested for SPEC to release my daughter's Speech Discharge but they have not done so. First the receptionist claimed that it was the July 4th holiday so it would take another week or so. The following weeks the excuse was that the Director of Speech was supposed to complete the release but never did. The receptionist said the director was too busy. This week the receptionist indicated that the reason for holding off the discharge was because the insurance company has not paid them yet. I called the insurance company and they indicated that **** had put the wrong codes on their claims and that they need to correct them in order for them to get paid. Today I called SPEC and spoke with the receptionist who transferred me twice to ***** **** the manager so that I can leave a message for a call back but the call never went through the voicemail. SPEC should not be holding off my daughter's speech discharge hostage because of payments due to their own error when filing an insurance claim. All I need is the speech discharge so that my daughter can continue with her speech therapy with another company.Sincerely,*****************************

    Business Response

    Date: 10/07/2023

I am pleased to be given the chance to respond to this complaint, the first in 33 years as a small business.  Of utmost importance, the father received the discharge letter he requested on the same date that the letter from the BBB was received by us.  The child has not received speech therapy since March 2023.
Although, this is not the first time this family has threatened us with going to social media and the BBB with a complaint, I rest assured all of the employees at SPEC have made extra effort to please this family.  We wish them well and hope the child gets the help needed.
During this years summer months, we had various people out on vacation, maternity leave, and summer programs to deal with.  We were short-staffed and simply did the best we could with the cards we had.  The allegation that we were holding a discharge hostage is false.  That is simply not our policy and most definitely a miscommunication.  Of note,a speech discharge OR a release from SPEC is not necessary to begin therapy at any other center.  The discharge summary was given to the father on 8/25/2023, the same date as his complaint was filed by him.  I hope that this clears up the confusion and we wish the family and especially the child, all the best.

Regarding insurance claims, it so happens we talked to the family on various occasions regarding the insurance not paying the invoices for the services rendered at the beginning of the year (7 invoices to be exact).  The claims have been sent before with the same codes and have been paid.  We spoke to the father about this and asked him to please call the insurance company. We are still unsure what codes the insurance is speaking about.  As is common practice, the patient is responsible for payment if their insurance company does not pay the invoices.  We are still trying to collect from the insurance company and have not sent an invoice to the family.
I hope that this clears up the confusion and we wish the family and especially the child, all the best.

I am rejecting this response because:

I respectfully disagree of their comments about the family being aware of the unpaid invoices and the delay in providing the discharge. That is just not true. That said, because I want to put this behind, please have SPEC send copies of those 7 invoices they claim that they have not been paid so I can follow up with my insurance company.

    Sincerely,
