I was trying to apply for my masters in Nursing so I applied at Miami Regional University and last week I went to visit the campus to talk about Financial Aid we spoke and they saw my black face and image and they told me that I had an appointment with ***** on the phone. I filled out a FAFSA form they showed me student loans for master they explained to me that interest would be added the minute I received the student loan, so I decided to pay out of pocket. The next day a person from Financial Aid called me she said her name was ******** and she told me that with student loans the cost for school was ****** dollars. I told her I would pay out of pocket then she said then the price would be $27,000 dollars I said okay I would pay that. Then she called me the next day and raised the price saying it would be $32,000 including the cost of books, laptop computer, help desk, diagnostic kits, and badges; however she mentioned that many weren't required. So I told her that I didn't want the laptop computer, diagnostic kit, and badge so what would my tuition be now? She told me to speak to my advisor about it I spoke to my advisor and ask her without the cost of all these things how much would it be and could the price be lowered now? Just because she saw me and she saw I was black with a Creole accent, she told me, that the school was not for bargaining and that I shouldn't go to school if I know I can't afford it as if I was a poor beggar on the streets just because I asked her a simple question. Then I was withdrawn from the school, which you will see in the files I attach. All I was trying to do was come up with a resolution with her for the payment. I was even about to tell her that I would pay me the full amount and she withdrew me just like that. She made me pay 150$ for the application fee and I asked her for a refund back since I wasn't the one to withdraw myself and since she was the one who withdrew me and she completely ignored me that's why I'm writing BBB.

We have reviewed and investigated Ms. ******************* and thank her for her feedback. We have concluded that her statements concerning a racial reason for cancellation of her application lacks merit. We are, however, disappointed to hear that ************ did not receive the level of customer service we expect ********************** to provide its applicants, and for that reason, ************ will receive a full refund of the nonrefundable application fee.

************ paid her nonrefundable application fee by phone in July 2023. She opted out of financial aid and an Office of the Bursar representative met with her by phone to discuss payment plan options. ************ was aware of the payment plan, as indicated in her email communications. All charges (tuition, additional costs, books, etc.) are clearly delineated on the advanced knowledge form for her program, which she also reviewed and signed. A sample Advance Knowledge is included.  As indicated on the form, printed books do not have to be purchased by the student. In addition, should the student provide their own preceptor in this program, the amount ($5,850.00 line item) is credited. ************ stated she would provide her own preceptor in an email. This resulted in the difference in price. However, ************ also wanted to opt out of required fees in the tuition plan. These items must be paid by the student and are provided by the university as part of the program. For example, all students must have a student badge. The technology fees are also listed and required for all students. ************ was correctly informed that these items were non-negotiable. Regarding an alleged laptop fee, MRU does not provide laptops or charge for them. Students provide their own devices which must satisfy the technical specifications in the university catalog. The application process cannot proceed if the applicant will not agree to pay the required amounts.

Miami Regional University is a student-centered institution and has been recognized as one of the most diverse colleges with more than 750 students (attachment). Diversity and inclusion are central to the universitys mission to provide quality undergraduate and graduate education that fosters the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes for diverse multigenerational learners.  We regret that ************ did not receive an optimal level of customer service from the admissions department and she will be receiving a full refund of her application and registration fees. We wish her well and hope that she continues her educational journey.
