5 starsI have been insured with Cabrillo since 2015. They have been a great carrier to be with regarding ease of use, communication and annual premium increases. I have read so many reviews on here that are negative that have nothing to do with Cabrillo. If the paperwork was not sent in that is the AGENTS fault. If you do not pay on time you will be cancelled. That is YOUR fault. If an agent writes a policy for you that you are not eligible for it will be cancelled. Every home insurance company follows the practice of depending upon the writing agent to pre-underwrite a risk before it gets to them. Unfortunately there are inexperienced agents, bad agents and agents that just make mistakes. None of those things are the fault of the carrier. Cabrillo is a careful company and that is good for policy holders. It keeps rates low when you do not insure risky homes.Review fromG. D.

1 starI applied for an HO6 condo insurance policy with Cabrillo through a local agency. I provided all the necessary documentation upfront including HOA master policy info and was fully transparent about my property type. Cabrillo accepted the policy, collected payment in full, and only weeks later canceled it after discovering the property wasnt coded as a condominium in the county records. This was information Cabrillo could and should have reviewed before issuing the policy. Instead, they canceled it after binding and withheld the policy fees in the refund even though the policy was never eligible in the first ******** left covering not just the policy fee, but also the time, frustration, and cost of finding new coverage at a significantly higher premium. Cabrillo made the mistake, but Im paying the price. Its deeply disappointing that a reputable company with an A+ BBB rating doesnt have a process in place to review property eligibility before binding a policy and doesnt take accountability when their own underwriting fails to catch an issue.I wouldnt recommend Cabrillo to anyone who expects thorough vetting, transparency, or customer-first service.Cabrillo Coastal General Insurance Agency, LLC

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. We take our policyholders concerns seriously, and we appreciate the opportunity to address them. Cabrillo refrains from providing detailed responses on this forum due to privacy concerns. In general, eligibility details are evaluated during the online quote and application process, but certain characteristics, like property use codes from appraiser websites, are not included. Upon request, Cabrillo will review these eligibility characteristics with agency partners pre-submission to offer guidance on eligibility and correct policy form selection. Otherwise, this information will be reviewed after an application is submitted, which is completed within the states allotted 60-day underwriting window.G. D.

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate the professionalism of the response, but I think it highlights the exact problem:Cabrillos process doesnt check a known eligibility disqualifier the property appraiser's use code unless someone specifically requests it before submission. Thats not something an average homeowner would even know to ask. And unfortunately, neither my agent nor Cabrillo raised this issue upfront. The policy was issued, payment taken, and only weeks later I was told it would be canceled due to **************** that point, I was left scrambling for new coverage (at a higher cost), updating my mortgage escrow, and trying to recover part of a premium only to be told policy fees wouldnt be refunded for a policy that never should have been issued in the first place.I'm not asking Cabrillo to break policy. Im asking the company to consider how this situation could have been prevented and to take accountability when the process misses a step that costs the customer time, money, and trust.Review fromRebekah N

1 starWe originally got insurance 5 years ago through a local company and not even a year into it were told that they could no longer cover us but that we were being handed over to Cabrillo and were assured we were in good hands. Everything was fine until we had to file a claim. The only person we had zero issues with was the field adjuster that came out for the initial inspection. Our claims adjuster did nothing but lie and fudge anything he spoke to us about. Making promises that our policy had this, that, and the third, only to turn around in our next conversation and say oh no theres no coverage for that. There was a lot of talk about picking over our policy with a fine tooth comb and speaking with their lawyers to find us a gray area that never came to fruition and things we were originally told were included in our policy ended up not being included in our policy after lawyers were consulted. Our adjuster was awful with keeping us informed and almost any time I called, I got a voicemail and my calls were either not returned for a few days or the call came in past 7pm. We ended up coming out of pocket 30k in total with insurance putting up a fight at every turn (so much for coverage). Were almost a year post claim and are still waiting for our withheld depreciation money to be sent to us. Its been over a week since our adjuster told us he had approved the depreciation value to be released and it took over a week to even hear from anyone that my initial email had been received regarding the depreciation value. I watched my family deal with a total loss from a fire about 12 years ago and never saw them have to fight the way we did with our home owners insurance. 0 out of 10 would never recommend Cabrillo and will gladly pay more for my policy if it means not ever dealing with them again.Cabrillo Coastal General Insurance Agency, LLC

1 starPolicy was started, they took our money, then cancelled us within two months. No prior warning. And when calling to find out why, two different people started telling me why then said oh I cant tell you the reasons. Underwriting has found issues, so they are cancelling. Withhold information about MY policy that I paid for. Then proceed to hang up on me twice when calling them out on their lies and asking for proof as to why they are cancelling. This company seemingly takes a month or two worth of payments and then cancels, effectively robbing people and putting them in bad position of having to rush to find another provider.Cabrillo Coastal General Insurance Agency, LLC

1 starI was under contract to purchase a new house. ******** was chosen by my agent (HH Insurance) to bind my home insurance. The loan was declined by underwriting 3 days before closing, so closing was cancelled and I did not move. I notified the agent to cancel the policy immediately. ******** still moved forward to electronically withdraw $760 from my checking account THE DAY BEFORE it was to take effect. They are not refunding me the payment for at least 2 weeks BY MAIL. The icing on the cake is that they were going to send the check to the address where I don't live. I fault both ******** and HH Insurance with this mess. I question the result if I ever filed a claim with them. Buy beware - ****** learned for me!Cabrillo Coastal General Insurance Agency, LLC

After this review was submitted an electronic deposit was made back to my bank on May 14 and I thank BBB for this (versus the check that ******** had originally indicated would be mailed)! BUT the deposit was $10 LESS than what ******** originally withdrew from my account on April 24. I should NOT be forced to pay ANY fees for this hassle when the withdrawal should have NEVER occurred! I have requested that my bank block any future electronic transactions from ******** (marked as "Orange Insurance") so they can just send the additional $10 reimbursement via check.Review fromKathy S

1 starAfter signing my insurance policy and paying amount that was quoted to me,a month later I get an invoice for $830 more with the dwelling cost increasing. After cancelling my insurance company I had because they were higher I went with this company because they quoted me significantly lower. I hope people read these bad reviews and not sign on with this company. I can't put a zero star rating bc that's what they rank. They don't even respond to emails.Cabrillo Coastal General Insurance Agency, LLC

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We take our policyholder concerns seriously and we appreciate the opportunity to address them. It is common for insurance companies to offer discounts when a home has specific characteristics or devices that lower the severity of damage should a loss occur. Because these characteristics reduce the insurance premium, documentation is required to confirm their presence, which is listed on the cover page of the application made available for your signature. When no supporting documentation is provided, the policy credits are removed and the premium adjusted. Insurance-to-value is the concept of insuring a home, the Coverage A- Dwelling limit, to the amount it would cost to rebuild the home if it was destroyed. Coverage A Dwelling will be increased to 100% insurance-to-value, when the requested coverage on the home is less than 100% of the replacement cost. We hope this additional insight provides a general perspective and why, occasionally, premiums change. We will be in contact with your insurance agency representative to discuss your concerns in greater detail. Thank youReview fromVicki V

1 starCabrillo Coastal is the worst HO Insurance I have ever dealt with. In October 2024, after receiving a quote, signing all paperwork, paying required start-up fees, paying second installation fees in December, we were canceled with less than a two week notice. After Hurricane ******, our roof ridge cap sustained MINOR shingle damage. The ridge cap was completely repaired (not patched as Cabrillo accused us of) by a licensed and insured roofing company in *****. I paid for a post repair 4 point inspection that indicated the repair was completed and accepted by the roofing inspector. After meeting Cabrillos requests to keep our policy current by completing the repair in a very timely manner, they notified us they were canceling us, giving us less than one week to find HO Insurance. DO NOT use this company. I have never had a claim and our townhome is in excellent shape, but this company looks for a reason not to insure. My question to Cabrillo is why did you waste my time and money? What a poor way to conduct business. Tha you, ***** ****Cabrillo Coastal General Insurance Agency, LLC

1 starVery difficult to complete and bind a policy My 4 point inspection turned out great and I was able to get the policy started. About a week later the company's inspector came out and he didn't find anything wrong.. he actually said; "I can't see any reason why you shouldn't get this ins month later I got a text saying they would cancel because of underwriting concerns like roofing, plumbing or bushes too close to the house.. well...I had a $10,000 roof done less than 4 yrs earlier. There seems to be many similar problems listed on your reviews.Cabrillo Coastal General Insurance Agency, LLC
