I hired JJD Painting to repaint my ****************** cabinets and my railings. From the beginning I indicated in writing the kitchen was a two-tone job, the bottom cabinets one color and the top another. Their initial bid was not competitive, and I told them I would look at competing bids first. They then said they 'forgot' the 10% discount for meeting them at the home show, and applied a 10% discount and a little more amount, so overall they reduced the price by about $900. The contract called for *************************** paint, so I provided *************************** colors, Stonington Gray bottom, and *************************** for the top. Their proposal acknowledged the price was to include - possibly two tones. When they started the job, they took the cabinet doors to their shop to paint and with my doors in hand, said they were going to switch to a better ******************************* cabinet paint (their recommendation). I said okay if they could show evidence of the cost difference from *************************** since that cost had been included in the bid. At no time did they ever disclose invoices or receipts for the new paint. On the final day of completing the work, fixing mistakes on door paint and touch-up, not once did ***** the owner say he was going to upcharge me, even though I was with them the entire day. That day (after work was done), he sent an unexpected bill for an additional $675 in labor and $300 in paint. I had already paid him for the Kitchen and the railings, so I had overpaid for the work completed, but I refused to allow him to apply my payment to unapproved upcharge labor. Even though I checked the cost of SW paint and doubted the $300 charge, to appease I said fine, keep $300 but refund the unfinished work payment - all adjusted he owes me $880. He agreed and said it would come the same way I paid, through Zelle. He now refuses to pay, and tried to make me sign a legal release before a refund! JJD engages in deceptive business practices. They refuse to return the overpayment.
