*** Hockey membership is required to try out for a student's hockey team. I signed my son up so that he could meet paperwork requirements to try out for his local middle-school hockey team. He's a first-timer who has plenty of dek hockey/stick handling experience and 6 one-hour skating clinics. I went through the multiple steps online and paid the $70 fee to join, plus $5 more to the local league, so $75 in total. We went to the first tryout (optional, before the 3 official tryouts) to meet the coach, to give him the required documents (*** Hockey, etc.) and tryout fee, and to skate to see how my son performed. When we saw the high level of skating of his peers, we immediately realized my son wasn't skating-ready for ice hockey at this time and informed the coach as such. He understood and kindly tore up our tryout-fee check. So I emailed *** Hockey, explained our situation, and though the site says no refunds, it also says there are exceptions. However, in two respectfully written email requests that I sent, both requests (one for a full refund and one for a partial refund plus a donation) were firmly denied. I think this is poor customer-service practice, not to even offer a refund for any or even half of the fee. Parents--who are investing a lot of time and considerable expense--should be aware of this inflexibility before being forced to pay a fee to *** Hockey just to try out.
