In October 2023 BBB investigated Return to Nature Funeral
Home’s business practices. This investigation was prompted by a large number of
complaints and law enforcement engagement with the business.
On October 5th, 2023, the Office of Funeral Home and
Crematory Registration of the State of Colorado issued a summary suspension
against Return to Nature Funeral Home.
Owned by Jon and Carie Hallford, the business was operating
from 815 E Platte Avenue, Colorado Springs, CO. An unregistered facility at 31
Werner Road, Penrose, CO, was also used until November 2022.
Law enforcement discovered approximately 190 decomposed
human remains at the Penrose property on October 4, 2023, dating back to 2019.
Respondents concealed improper storage and misrepresented services. They also
fraudulently obtained over $800,000 from the U.S. Small Business
Administration.
BBB has been investigating Return to Nature Funeral Home
following numerous complaints. These complaints allege misrepresentation of
services, failure to handle remains properly, and unethical business practices.
BBB has issued advisories to consumers while working with state authorities on
