Purchased a used 2016 Ram 3500 on October 22nd, 2024 from **** who is the owner of Tanner 4x4. Vehicle had about ******* miles at the time of purchase. On October 30th and with about ***** miles put on the truck from time of purchase, the truck lost all power and began to push exhaust out of the air intake. Shortly after it died and would not restart but continued to push exhaust out of the air intake while attempting to turn the ignition over. The Ram had to be towed off a mountainside where it left me stranded during on the second to last day of my hunting season. After it was recovered and I towed it back to the town I live in it was discovered that the *** had completely clogged resulting in an inability for exhaust gasses to leave the exhaust and back up to the air intake. It created so much back pressure that the truck could not run and would not start. After notifying **** of the issue he claimed they had no issues with the exhaust or *** system even though the exhaust tip had been cut off of the vehicle. This was noted to **** at time of purchase but he didnt disclose any exhaust or *** issues. The *** had been damaged beyond repair as smog and soot was on both the inlet and exhaust sides of the filter. After consulting with two local *** cleaning companies I was informed the *** was beyond cleaning and would need to be replaced. It is also unknown the extent of any possible damage the downstream exhaust SCR may have accumulated from this issue. **** did not offer any recourse.Initial Complaint

Transaction date May 29th, 2024 Went to this shop to have an alignment done on my Jeep Gladiator after installing a lift kit. I called the shop and asked them questions to confirm the scope of work that would be done. After arriving to my appointment job was done in one hour. When I got home I noticed that my rear axle was not adjusted to sit centered to the frame and was sticking out one inch towards passenger side. Called the shop and brought the truck back and issue was fixed. This was confirmed during initial phone call that axle would be centered to the frame. 5 days later I drove on off-roading vacation on Rimrocker from *********** to *******. On the trail control arms came loose because shop failed to torque them down and utilize Loctite which they supposed to. In images you can see marks on the frame from mounting bolts from control arms to the frame shifting.Business Response

Good morning , I still don't have a link to answer the complaint ,however I have already spoken to the customer and offered him a complete refund. He responded today and said that would be great. My tech feels like he did not leave anything loose and said it did go through our double check protocol with a second tech to quickly look at the work with a fresh eye..... However things happen and perhaps it was missed. Either way , we will hope to salvage a customer and offer a refund for the alignment. ThanksCustomer Answer

Transmission/steering 1200 Initial install quote 750 2nd install 1600 rebuild (no quote)449 drive shafts Rear differential 900 rear diff labor 490 diff parts (said 140)Total 5389 Bill 8260 Difference of 2871 Came down to 6500 but still 1111 more than quoted.Told me it would be $8260. I told him that what he had been quoting me should be $5389. He finally came down to $6500. This is still $1111 more than he quoted me. Said his guy had a lot into trying to make the transmission work. Told him that he told me they do not do transmission work and they should have communicated with me. Said he was out of town for a while and wasnt sure what all was done. Told him several times that this is considerably more than he quoted me.Picked it up and got it home. Transmission and transfer case leaking pretty good. After looking at it it is missing an o ring, detent bearing and nut to hold the shift lever on. I was able to pull the shift lever off just by pulling it with my hand. Missing a boot on the steering wheel and poor work on the shift linkage. I had to redo shift linkage as well as fix the leaking transmission and transfer case.**** did say that I could bring it back in and they would fix the leaks. I did not want to take it back to them due to the poor workmanship, lack of communication and over charging. They never initiated communication with me. The only time I received an update was when I called. Was the transmission I supplied even bad or were they just trying to get more money out of me. I really have no idea. Overall a very bad experience. Overcharged and very poor work.Business Response

In regards to Mr. ***** complaints ,
Mr. ***** was given an estimate to install or perform an automatic transmission conversion with him supplying all the necessary and correct parts to do the job. He was to supply , a steering column for the auto transmission with the shift linkage and steering couplers , automatic transmission and transfer case for this vehicle , pedal assembly with all necessary brackets and hardware to do the job. This is not what he provided , in fact nothing he provided was correct. The steering column was wrong for the steering gear box he had on his vehicle requiring us to build and modify the mounts , the couplers , and shift linkages to work. The correct coupler had to be ordered ( and was expensive ) as well as pushing the time frame back considerably. I mention the time frame because out technicians are on commission and our shop normally schedules 4-6 weeks in advance. When a customer supplies their own parts , the techs don't just stand around waiting for them to get the correct parts , they move on to the next job in line and get this job back into rotation. When the correct coupler was located and received , the technician had to modify the column and the mounts to accommodate the customers power steering conversion ( that was not mentioned when scheduling) that required the install and removal of the column several times and obviously taking much more time than a simple bolt in installation would have. This was kind of the theme of this whole job.
The transmission and transfer case were more of the same. The customer stated he had purchased a rebuilt transmission from E-bay or Craigs list and it should be ready to go. We bolted the transmission in only to find that the transmission would not sit flush against the engine block. After pulling it in and out several times we discovered that the trans seal was not letting the torque converter seat all the way in the transmission. Wrong seal caused us to have to remove the transmission at least 3 times and of course time to install new seal. After all this , we moved on to the transfer case installation. Unfortunately , we had more of the same. The transfer case was missing a bearing retainer , bull gear , and input seal. Again, we had to install several times to get all his parts to work. After all of this we fired the truck up to test transmission only to find it was no good. I explained to Mr. ***** that we did not rebuild automatic transmission in house , but I would send it to a rebuilder and see what was wrong with it. During our conversation , ************* explained that his budget was getting thin and the price was getting too high for him and asked if there was anything we could do to help keep the price down. I told him I would pull the trans and transfer case out for ****** ( about half price) but explained I didn't have any control of what the transmission shop charged , but gave him the estimate they gave me based on a basic rebuild. The transmission shop informed us that this transmission was not only not rebuilt , but was missing parts and had the wrong torque converter in it all together. I asked them to please treat us as good as they could because the customer had purchased the transmission as a rebuilt unit and was obviously taken.
The customer had asked us to please take a look at the rear end to see what gears and what kind of locker was in the differential. he stated he didn't want the locker in it. I explained to him that this model differential didn't have an inspection cover and had to be completely disassembled to check these items out. After we had it apart , the customer acted like he didn't understand there would be a charge for taking it all apart and checking those items out. Any way, he asked to go ahead and install a "open carrier" and remove the locker. We did this. The rear differential work was not part of the original estimate.
I understand , that this project went way over Mr. ***** budget and that it took much longer to complete , but I feel like this was a result of him providing the incorrect parts. I feel like we did everything we could do to help him with the cost and did everything we could do to make his project work for him. I am quite certain he has no idea how much work we never charged him for while trying to figure out what was wrong with his stuff. Even after this , I discounted it even further when he came in complaining about the cost .
I feel like the all the prices were discussed and communicated with Mr. ***** , but I also understand that when a job is here for a very long time , it is difficult to keep track of all the numbers. I feel badly that his project went over his budget , but we didn't get the wrong parts or sell him bad products , that is on him.
We have been in business for over 50 years , and in that time , I think we have had to answer BBB complaints 4 times that I can remember. I have never been accused of doing work that wasn't needed ( like his transmission) and I generally try very hard to keep a customer whenever possible. This is the very reason I agreed to discount an additional ******* for Mr. *****. At this point , I feel like this relationship and this customer is lost and I am not willing to work with this customer any further.Customer Answer

I am rejecting this response because:I appreciate the reply however these issue should have all been communicated and I should have been given the opportunity to decide if I wanted to move forward due to the increased cost. The first time I knew about the extra labor was when I picked up the vehicle. In fact, **** did not even know what the labor was for and had to go ask his technician. As I mentioned I was told that the transmission would be looked over prior to install which was clearly not done. You mentioned that you had to buy or fabricate a new steering column part however that is not true as your technician just welded the shaft to the steering box.
Also, as I mentioned the transmission and transfer case were both leaking significantly when I got it home and it was clear that it was poor quality of work. I do appreciate that **** was willing to have me bring it back in to look at and that he did come down from the initial labor quote.
I know that we will not come to a resolution to this as we both feel we are right so I will just chalk this up to a bad experience.
Sincerely,
