My Dad who is elderly received a letter in late November from the Colorado *** requiring him to take a written and road driving test. I called 911 for more information on written and road tests. They had an appt. on Monday, at 1:30 p.m. I reconfirmed the date and time for his appointment. When my dad arrived, they administered the written test, but had no record of his road test appointment. However, due to a last-minute cancellation, they were able to administer a road test. My Dad failed his road test; and is adamant in his view of the reasons why. However, this did not mean that he could not retake it. We re-scheduled him with 911 for a driving class and road test. We had just come from the *** where he paid for a license reinstatement and a ***** permit to take the road test. We arrived we were told that the owner had decided that my dad was not safe on the road. They had cancelled him from both the class and road test. The explanation was that they felt that he was not safe on the road. My main concern is that there was no communication, no phone call, email that they would not provide him with the service or accommodation that the driving school offers. Had we known this in advance there are other driving schools that we could have made an appointment with, based upon the short limitations of the permit. From our experience with the front desk it was obvious that any further interaction would be biased against him, he was losing the opportunity to reinstate his license which was demoralizing. He believes he deserved another opportunity to test. He was confused by the cancellations and why he was being denied his right to be retested; and that he was being discriminated against primarily because of his age. I have left 911 ************** messages for the owner to call me with an explanation as to why they did not bother to inform us about the cancellation prior to our arrival. As of today, they have not contacted me.

********, I did in fact call you on two separate occasions and left you voicemails both times to a (970) number.  Would be happy to provide phone records for verification.  The latest call was Friday afternoon (a few days ago) where I briefly explained the decision and stated I'd be back in the office on Monday if you'd like to call and discuss further.  My staff and I discussed your father's driving abilities and our decision had nothing to do with age discrimination, and that is a huge claim for you to make against us (libel). Our decision came based solely off his ability to know the road laws and to operate a vehicle safely on our roads.  The State Certified Examiner that works for us, that provided him his test, informed us that he was unable to safely perform nearly every maneuver and that he was not able to safely control the vehicle and maintain the vehicle in a safe manne around other vehicles. The state driving examiner, that performed his road test, stated he would not feel comfortable being any vehicle with your father again to do a retest.  In 13 years, this is one of the very few times that we have ever had a ************** refuse to get back into a vehicle with someone they have tested previously.  Based on that information, and the notes from the drive test, and after reviewing his written test that he had to take for the state, it was determined that he is not in a position to retest and we did not want you/him to waste money continuing to test him when we knew he was no where near being able to pass .  We believe in road safety, and we believe that per the regulations and mandates given to us by the ***************** we are to ensure that all drivers that are issued licenses by the ***************** meet all safety standards according to their rules and expectations (not ours).  In this case, we could not in good conscience tell the ***************** that your father met all safety requirements and could properly and safely operate a vehicle on the ******** roads or that he knew the basic road knowledge in order to have an Instructional Driving Permit.  The ***************** took his driver's license away for a reason, and when he tested with us that reason became evident. Unfortunately he is not able to pass the driver's road test and therefore is not able to get his license again.  Yes, there's probably another school that he can go to and test and he may do better at... We just cannot, in good conscience, be the driving school that put him back on the road with other drivers based solely on his abilities and knowledge - age had nothing to do with it.  It is our goal to create safe and knowledgeable Drivers and to help everyone learn to drive safe and enjoy the freedoms that come with this, however, not everyone does or can.
