The contractor was initially hired to remodel a home in **********, **. The contractor provided an initial estimate of the work and asked for initial downpayment of 10%, which was ~*****. The contract did say that there was no refund after 10 days. However, the contractor kept increasing the total price way over what we originally agreed. We tried to work with the contractor to reduce the price by doing the work in phases and removing work items. However, he was never able to come in with a price we could afford. After we said we had to put the work on hold since we had a baby and my wife was taking off work and asked for a refund of the amount not used and that we would complete the work in a couple years, the contractor stopped responding. We asked for him to keep our money in a separate account and provide us statements periodically until we were able to resume the work. The contractor still refused to respond. We hired a lawyer to try to get some resolution. The contractor said they were unwilling to do anything for us including provide a refund or complete the work at a later time. They said simply that the no refund statement in the original contract was all that mattered even if they refused to do the work, which seems totally unfair and illegal. We cannot afford to pursue this in court, but we do not want anyone ever using this contractor again as they appear to be a criminal and never really intended to do this work. It seems obvious that they just kept stringing us along with lies and kept exceeding the amount we said we could afford on purpose.
