Complaint: Failure to Deliver Promised Results, Breach of Money-Back Guarantee, and Poor Service
I’m filing this complaint due to Anthem Tax Services’ failure to improve our tax situation, as promised. Over two years, our debt grew from $78,000 to $90,000, and our IRS monthly payment rose from $750 to $1,200—despite paying nearly $9,000 in fees for what has amounted to a worse financial situation
We chose Anthem over other firms because of its heavily advertised Money-Back Guarantee. That guarantee has not been honored, even though our outcome is objectively worse.
Throughout the process, we experienced chronic mismanagement: missed meetings, poor communication, and no urgency. We were asked to resubmit the same financial documents four times, inflating billable hours now used as an excuse to deny our refund.
Anthem advised us to pursue an Offer in Compromise (OIC) based on a documented medical hardship. We were told a $23,000 settlement was likely, and liquidated retirement funds—incurring a $9,000 tax penalty. The OIC and appeal were both denied, with no results after multiple submission cycles.
When we finally requested a refund, we were told "expenses needed to be offset," and offered only a $1,500 credit, which is unacceptable given our worsened position and the Money Back Guarantee that led us to choose Anthem.
I am formally requesting a full refund of the fees paid. Anthem failed to deliver results and did not honor its written commitment.Business Response

We here at Anthem Tax Services take consumer concerns very seriously. Upon receiving this concern, we immediately reached out to the consumer and our currently still attempting to resolve the situation. Unfortunetly, because things have taken a little longer than anticiapted, we have reached the end of the time frame allocated by the BBB for us to solve this issue, and we are forced to answer this inquiry prior to the issue being resolved. Consumer is now going to get an email asking if they are satified with the outcome, however, its obvious they are not becuase we are still going back and forth.. Consumer, feel free to take your time responding to this new emai;. We will get this worked out.
Thanks

On 4/21/2025 I paid anthem $500 for a promise to lower or remove my tax debts ($20000); also promising some type of resolution within a 90 day period.
5/2/25 They asked for forms and I sent all forms and paperwork the same day.
In the past 90 days I’ve received lien letters and interest has accrued through the entire 3 months. Not only am I going through the stress of life; I now have to go thru a mental breakdown unknowing the certainty of the help I tried to ask for.
As I call weekly to get an update I continuously get told my forms are with the tax preparer with a brush off answer to make it sound sweet even though I’m going through a real urgent matter.Business Response

Date of Transaction: January 2025
Amount of Money paid: $2900.00
The business is a tax resolution company
The nature of the dispute is I have spent this money looking for help with my 2022 tax bill, with the IRS. The company agreed to bi-weekly communications which they have failed to do. I had to contact the office myself for updates, at times months had passed without any communication. I called and FINALLY got a person on the phone and switched to another case worker, and the same exact thing happened again, the solution I am looking for is a refund so I can take my business elsewhere.Business Response

Wish I could give it zero stars if I could. I asked for a refund of my $1500 and disputed it with my bank. NO WORK WAS DONE on my file at least to my knowledge when I requested the refund. I am entitled to one if no work was done. I have emailed. I have called. Never got a correspondence back however they reversed the claim as if they rendered the service. At least if you're going to put my account in the negative and charge me for tax returns, the very least you can do is do my taxes and communicate with me that you're actually doing them. Do not do business with them! SCAMBusiness Response

I contacted anthem tax services after receiving a tax bill for roughly $86,000. I paid anthem roughly $9,300 to help resolve the debt and at least remove any penalties or interest that were accrued.
I originally contacted anthem on March 3rd 2025, and was told my case would take approximately 3 months to complete. However in that period of time anthem has done nothing to contact the IRS or begin negotiations.
I had submitted all financial documentation and followed every request that was made by anthem. I inform them at the time of the call that I was on a current payment plan from a previous tax year, therefore a resolution need to account for both my current tax issues and previous tax years payment plan.
The first thing anthem would say is that they would put my debt in a non collectible status. They never did that.
Then after a phone call with the company after I explained that I had paid the tax because I did not want to accrue anymore interest or penalties.
My experience with anthem makes me believe that this is a scam service. It
They will happily talk to you about resolving your debt and makes it seem like everything is sunny and roses. But when it comes down to it, anthem simply does not deliver on it's contract.
I even had a phone call with Brandon explaining that I had paid the debt down, and was looking to retrieve penalty or accrued interest. However to this day I am still receiving emails from Alexis a week after this phone call requesting financial documentation that is not necessary.
My only remedy for this situation is to provide a refund. Please have the complaint doctor call me as soon as possible so that we can resolve this to my satisfaction.Business Response

When I enrolled with Anthem Tax Servicesin February 2025, they made a promise to negotiate a lower tax debt to the IRS. I have been sending documents back and forth to them for months with no movement, and Carlos Ibarra has been mostly non-contactable. Any time I ask them anything they give canned responses and vague information. The balance they say I owe is significantly more than what the IRS portal states.
They have asked for additional arbitrary fees to the point their fee is more than the penalties that the IRS has assessed to me. They have done work of zero value essentially and I do not trust them.Business Response

In November 20 25, I called Anthem Tax services and pay $500 to help them resolve my tax issues. I was assigned to an who assured me that he would work with the IRS to lower the amount I owe if not eliminated. After several months of waiting, I had not heard anything. I continuously tried reaching out and was never responded to in a proper manner. Eventually, this who had said he would help me order a transcript from the IRS and then finally when I reached him, told me that I could callthem and set up a payment plan. Per our conversation, he had said he was going to help me out and he was going to help eliminate some of the debt, butat that point, he was just telling me something I could’ve done myself. I need to reach out to somebody now, but I’ve spent $500 for him to help. I was expecting someone to help me and for the first time I was relieved and yet now I have more to worry about. He could really care less and then told me that I could pay 2000 more and he could try to do something for me. Our conversation and what he told me he was going to do never happened.Business Response

It took us over a year for what we thought was a resolution. Received a letter that said as long as we kept the taxes paid for future returns we wouldn’t have to worry about the previous years. Year after this was done and we paid them we started receiving letters about the past debt. We had reached out to Anthem and they said we would have to pay them again to even look at the issue. We contacted the IRS and they said the company submits a letter, that we could do ourselves ,to put a hold on the account from being in collective status but continues to collect interest. So because of us using this company we now owe an additional $20000 plus out the money we paid them. This was a waste of our money. Of course I asked about the refund that they promised if not resolved but I have been ignored.Business Response

Complaint: 23321073
I am rejecting this response because:
Todd Lewis had reached out to me saying they needed more time and to reject the response being there was no real response. Todd was reaching out to Anthem about getting us a refund being they have cost us with their fees and interest has cost $20000 + . We are just asking for the refund that was told we would get if they could not make the situation go away.
I had to deal with the IRS ourselves to get them to stop coming after us.

A few years ago I had some issues with the IRS and had a legit reason why I didn’t owe some of the taxes they claimed I did. I couldn’t get them to lower my tax debt so I hired anthem tax services. I never dealt with the same person more than twice and was told there was a solution I agreed thinking there was some relief coming. I never received any debt reduction they have kept my refund multiple times since and I’m still receiving notices from the IRS including threats of liens and Levy of my properties.Customer Answer

Back in September of 2023 I contacted Anthem Tax services to get assistance with my prior years taxes and repayments. I was immediately put in contact with an agent, they got on the phone with the IRS, and I started my paperwork process. I was told that based on my tax situation that I would need to pay $10,000 for services in lowering my payments. I paid the $10,000 for them to get started on my claim. I send all documents in when necessary and would go periods of time with no communication. I called and followed up on multiple occasions and it wasn't until I would call to follow up that additional things were brought up that were needed. I was charged for calls I made to find out my status, and at the end for someone being assigned to handle my complaint.
Long story short it wasn't until I continued to call, and file a complaint about no communication that I learned that my agent was released. Still to this day my taxes go unresolved and as I stated in attached emails this $10,000 I paid for help would of been better used to go towards my IRS debt. When I got in contact with a resolution manager I was told I would be refunded $4,000 on a call that she was even late for. That was back in August of 2024. I reached out today and still no resolve. I was even sent a copy of my agreement which sates after 3 days I am not eligible for my refund, however they were responsive for the first 3 days. I have attached their invoice and my emails JUST between my assigned agent and me. I can provide call records, emails to other agents, and proof of sending in documents multiple times if necessary. I even explained I would like to work with them in the future and I am getting no further assistance. I feel as if I was scammed and can provide any necessary information. I would just like to have my money refunded after receiving less then minimal assistance. (This has been going on 17 months)Business Response
