Last week I received a postcard from the Orange County Register telling me the price for my newspaper subscription would increase on July 11th. It was over a 63% increase from my previous bill. On July 8th: a) I called the Register to cancel my subscription; b) the agent told me I would have to cancel online and also verified that I did not owe any money on my account; c) I immediately went online and canceled my subscription and received confirmation that it was canceled; d) I also checked my credit card charges at the bank and no OC Register subscription charge was there. On July 9th, the OC Register subscription charge suddenly appeared on my credit card account in the amount of $650.65 which would be the cost of a new subscription which would have begun July 11th per the postcard. I emailed the OC Register website (********) advising them of this and requesting the $650.65 charge be removed from my account. On July 10th, a) they denied my request because the subscription had already been automatically renewed; b) I advised them that I was not accepting their decision and disputing the charge with my credit card company; c) I filed the dispute with my credit card company. Thank you very much for your help in removing this charge from my credit card.Business Response

Thank you for contacting us via the Better Business Bureau portal. In review of your account I found that you contacted us , via email, on 7/10 about 3pm in the afternoon. At that time our email customer service agent cancelled your subscription as requested and submitted a request for a refund of your last payment in the amount of $650.65. In this filing you mention that you have disputed the payment with your bank. We will not move forward on issuing a refund as you have disputed the amount and it will be returned by your bank.Customer Answer

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that this resolution would be satisfactory to me. I will wait for the business to perform this action and, if it does, will consider this complaint resolved. Please note that the business did not say or otherwise advise me that they would issue a refund. As of now, my bank is still in the process of reviewing my dispute with the charge placed by the business on my credit card.
Thank you,

I have been receiving a daily newspaper from the Register since I moved into this house 8 months ago. I do not have an account with them or pay for the newspaper, but it is thrown on my driveway everyday. I have contacted them 6 times to stop delivery, but get no response. As mentioned in the attached emails, my main concern is for safety and security for my family and house when I go on vacation. The newspapers piling up on my driveway while I am gone will be an invitation to criminals of all sorts. All I want is for the delivery to be stopped. Any help would greatly be appreciated.Business Response

I am sorry to learn your requests to cancel delivery have not been acted on.
Once again I have escalated this situation to our home delivery team letting them know a paper should not be delivered to your home, as we have no active subscription at your address.

This business cheats the subscriber by offering a certain number of weeks and then delivering 8 less weeks. I paid a reduced rate of $351.99 for 26 weeks, but the subscription period only goes for 18 weeks. Therefore, I am being charged for a service I do not receive. I have opted out of the Special Edition issues which run $7 per issue. At a discounted rate of $12.35 per week my subscription is supposed to include the delivery fee and taxes. My current subscription runs from 12/22/2024 to 5/5/2025 which is only 18 weeks. The disclaimer states that other "service fees" might be applied as well which shortens the subscription period. At $12,35 per week for 18 weeks with $18.00 Taxes and $67.30 for delivery, I should be paying $307.60. I appreciate the 26 week offer for $351.99, but that is not what I am getting. I would really appreciate a transparent bill that states what additional fees I am paying over the subscription period.Business Response

Thank you for contacting us via the Better Business Bureau web portal.
In review of your account I found that on 12/31/2024 we mailed a renewal bill in the amount of $435.98 (for 26 weeks of 7 day delivery)
On 1/16/2025 we received your payment in the amount of $351.99 which paid your subscription for 146 days, not 26 weeks. The subscription dates were 12/17/2024 - 5/12/2025.
We do have a service surcharge which is not billed separately but 1.26 is deducted each week, and will shorten the paid thru date. This fee caused your subscription dates to change from 5/12/2025 to 5/3/2025. The surcharge shortened your subscription date by 9 days. Your account is opted out of the Premium Editions. You will not be charged for these in the future.
We posted your most recent renewal payment of $351.99 on 5/13 and your account is now paid till 9/27/2025, although the service surcharge will change the pay thru date .
I hope this helps to address the concerns in your filing, but please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID ********, and find that their answer at least reveals the unknown service charge per week that shortens the subscription time from the 26 weeks I paid for to only 18 weeks. When I talked with ***************** they said they have a plan for seniors for 26 weeks for $351. But that was bogus apparently. I do like the Register paper and after seeing many other complaints on line about their service, I realize I am not alone. I appreciate BBB's assistance so I at least learned about the weekly service charge that shows up nowhere.
Regards,

Our records indicate the $14.00 was to pay a renewal of your digital subscription to The Orange County Registe which was started online on 3/29/2024.
At that time you responded to an offer sent via email, and agreed to the automatic renew at the rate of $14.00 every 4 weeks
This Digital subscription is paid until 4/27. Please let me know if you will continue beyond that date of if you wish to cancel this subscription on the expiration date.

I did not authorize a charge or a subscription to this company. I was approached on the date of this subscription (Sep 30, 2024) by a kid that knocked on my door - asking for help to "fund" his college tuition. There was no communication that the amount ($25) was to subscribe to this newsletter (which I would have declined if I knew). There was no communication that this would result in a AUTO-RENEWAL subscription nor is there any MAIL regarding an auto-renewal subscription.I did not authorize any creation of a user account. The account name on file (Chirn Yu) is not the correct name either. This constitutes shady business practices as the student masked the $25 as a donation to his college fund when in reality it was a subscription to a newsletter (an auto-renewal subscription at that). They (the company) preyed on unsuspecting individuals while going door-door in a gated community. I have contacted customer service to cancel my account once I noticed several charges to my credit card. They were not able to refund my previous charges despite explaining my situation.I will follow up if my account is not deleted/erased.Reference number: ********JBBusiness Response

I have been a faithful Orange County Register subscriber for over 25 years and the rates have been skyrocketing where I have paid $301 for an 8 week subscription. I called the paper on Monday 2/17/2025 to see what they could due about the cost. Prior to making the phone call I searched their website and found that for new customers they have a promotion, copy attached, for $200 for 52 weeks. So when I called them, I asked what they could do to a long time customer and they said that they could do about $175 for a 2 month subscription. I then asked to speak to a manager. When the manager came on the line I said that why should a pay $175 for 2 months when a new subscriber only pays just a little more than that for a full year. She said that was the best that they could do so I said to cancel my current subscription. She said that the subscription would end at the beginning of April and then it would cancel, I said that this was garbage and that I wanted the subscription cancelled immediately. She then stated that it would cancel the next day and I would receive about $173 in credit. When I review this, I am only 1/4 into the 2 month period that started February 3 and that should only be about $75 so I should get a refund on $225 not the amount stated.
In summary, as a long term customer I was not treated anywhere near what a brand new customer was being treated and was getting ripped off. Then they tried to tell me I could not cancel my subscription until it expired in addition to short changing me on the refund. These are totally unethical business practices in the attempt of taking hard earned money from customers.Business Response

Thank you for contacting us via the Better Business Bureau web portal. In review of your account, I find that on 2/19 you spoke with one of our Corporate VIP Service agents who called in an effort to win back your business. At that time we offered a 52 week annual rate of $224.12. Our attempt was successful and your subscription was restarted and the balance of $233.49 was reapplied to your account. Your account is now paid one year in advance. Please let me know if this is agreeable to you, or if you would prefer a refund for a portion of the remaining balance.

Ive never lived in Orange County and somehow the OC Register stole my debit information and subscribed me to their newspaper without my permission. I went to my graduation on 5/16/2024 in Orange County and then ever since 5/17/2024 they charged me ***** for 2 charges and then ***** for 4 charges every 1 to 2 months without my knowledge. I have literally no idea how my information was released to them but theyre an extremely predatory business. Trying to hide their fees by switching up the recurrence dates is very sneaky. Im hoping my bank dispute goes through and I get a return on all the stolen money. I can only imagine the damage they could do to someone not paying attention for longer.Business Response

Sent written cancelation, called twice to cancel, keep sending news paper and trying to collect subscription fees. Non authorized subscription. Like trying to get out of the Mafia!Business Response

.
On 12/24, one full month prior we sent a renewal bill for the amount owed but our records show no contact from this customer to cancel the subscription until today 1/27.
At that time he told the customer service agent that he had tried to cancel three months prior. The agent explained that we showed no record of his calls top cancel. The account has been cancelled. The negative amount owing is $133.29 .
Strictly as a courtesy, I have adjusted off the balance left owing,
