I have been looking for a car for my daughter over the past few months and watching the prices come down on several vehicles. I was interested in two vehicles at Fontana Mazda, a red 2020 Mazda CX-5 (VIN: *****************, Stock #: ********, listing price of $20,995) and a white 2020 CX-5 (VIN: *****************, Stock # ******, listing price of $22,994). Both were found via the AAA Car Buying Event website for AAA members (*******************************************************t) which typically has another $500 off the advertised price. These advertised prices were also found on the "Autotrader.com" website. On 06/03/2023, I began a text message conversation with Internet Manager "****" (Phone # ###-###-####) regarding these vehicles. I focused on the red vehicle and asked what the actual listing price was since his dealerships own website had the car listed at $24,995. He asked to send pictures of the lower prices for verification, and I did. He then indicated that most of the prices are listed without "pre-installed products." I advised that I don't pay for any dealer add-ons and it is illegal to require them to be purchased. The text conversation continued and he indicated his dealership prices "more towards the wholesale side" plus dealership accessories of $2,985. After more messages, my offer of $19,300 (to include Certified Pre-Owned status and no add-ons) was not accepted. I was then directed to the dealer website which shows a vehicle's "listed" price and then adds $2,985 for a "Platinum Security Package." This is fraudulent advertising in order to entice buyers. In short, it is IMPOSSIBLE to purchase a vehicle from them even at the full listed price since that is not the true price. To require the purchase of optional equipment makes it NOT OPTIONAL. This is a scam, plain and simple. I have all the evidence to support my contentions. I'm sure the dealership will say this was only a misunderstanding but it's a slimy scam.
