*********************** and her staff provided inadequate supervision of children in the classes my daughter attended at her dance school. Despite my communication with *********************** about the problem, nothing was done, resulting in my child feeling unable to continue after trying for months to work within the classes. When I told *********************** that we needed to withdraw my daughter, she charged me the remainder of the class fees and a "re-blocking" penalty of $150. I think this was unreasonable, as the fault did not lie with us -- my daughter was ready to participate were it not for bullying from other children. Further, as part of a costume, *********************** ordered shoes for my daughter for $100 which fit so badly that she has an injury for which we needed a doctor's visit and x-ray. I asked *********************** if we could return them, as they had been worn fewer than 4 times and only in the studio. She said she would look into it but she did not. I would like to have the $100 for the shoes and the $150 penalty refunded. I can return the shoes to the studio if *********************** wants to return them to her supplier - they are in perfect condition.

    Business Response

    Date: 07/12/2023

I received the complaint sent to the Better Business Bureau from *********************************. I am sorry that her child did not feel connected with the other team members at Project Performer.  Our instructors are trained to and strive to maintain an efficient and positive learning environment.  In addition to the required training for instructors, I meet with the instructors frequently to ensure that classes meet our standards listed in the Behavior & Conduct section of our studio agreement.  The safety of our students is a top priority, and a staff member is present in the classroom with students.  We also aim to have an inclusive environment at Project Performer that allows each student to flourish.  Although ****************** never mentioned bullying to me or anyone on my staff, she did notify me that her child did not feel connected. Thereafter we worked to help her child feel more involved and connected to the other team members that regularly dance together.

I was surprised when ****************** suddenly withdrew her daughter from the competition season and terminated the agreement early.  Nonetheless, I worked to explain the rationale for the costs charged, including out of pocket entry fees, costumes, and additional fee/costs resulting from having to re-choregraph the number after her child unexpectedly withdrew from the group competition team.  The basis for these fees and costs were outlined in the signed agreement and explained in detail.

As an instructor and small business owner, I am saddened that a student did not feel connected at my studio and withdrew early.  Therefore, I have offered to refund ****************** the $250.00 requested as a gesture of goodwill and as a showing that we care deeply about the arts in our community.  I hope this good faith offer adequately addressed her complaint.
