    recently move to a new home here in the NE of Bakersfield around August of 2021. My first 3 cal water bills were 50-70$ at this time I would water my grass daily through our automatic sprinkler system. Our December 2021 bill jumped to 150+ which didn’t make sense because i had stopped watering our grass due to a letter we received about our drought here in California so I turned off automatic sprinklers in November. I asked about the spike in the bill cal water rep told me they had misread the meter and charged me the remainder of the month prior. Although I thought it was excessive it made a little sense and didn’t make a big deal about it. The following bill in January 2022 came in at $500+ Which was a ridiculous amount I called to have them look into it. Again they “misread” the meter and it went from 500+ to 460ish. Still a ridiculous amount so I told them that there must be a mistake. I explained to them the fact that I had shut off my sprinklers about 2-3 months back so I was expecting the water bill to go down they proceeded to throw these “it could be” scenarios it could be a leak , homeless people can be stealing your water, ur toilet could be running. The meter has a leak indicator which would show if I had a leak I asked if they check it when they come she said yes they check every time and would inform me if so. I have not fixed a leak since the 500+ bill which means if there was a leak then there would still be a leak at this time. When they came on 1/12/21 to investigate and they found out they “misread” the meter there was no mark of a leak on the indicator which rules that scenario out. I also checked both of my toilets for ongoing flush and they were working good no ongoing water which rules that scenario out as well. As for someone stealing our water we live in a gated community with cameras everywhere and very friendly neighbors.
