Cureallplumbing came out to give me a quote to replace a ball valve joint that controlled the irrigation line which was connected to the house water line. He then suggested that I might want to get a water pressure regulator for the house as that's the first thing insurance adjusters look at if you have water damage caused by too high of water pressure. (nice sales pitch, huh) I said ok. He quoted me $630.85. I had no idea what water pressure regulators or ball valve joints cost. It took him about 1 1/4 hrs. to do the job. I knew plumbers were expensive but.... Unfortunately, I agreed . In retrospect I wish I had gotten another quote. This was on 8/13/21. Saturday 8/14/21 I went out and saw that my dripper system was running and shouldn't have been running. Further observation showed it was running even though the timer system was turned off. I called the plumber back and wanted him to come see if any of his work would have caused this. When he came, he thought it could be a problem with the irrigation valves but said he didn't really work on irrigation plumbing. At that time I also noticed the tag on the new water pressure regulator he installed said "must have a pressure gauge installed down stream to verify proper valve setting" which he did not install. I told this to ****** (plumber) and he said that was the customers responsibility. I ask you this --- if I can't install my own ball valve joint in line, how am I going to install a pressure gauge in line???? I had an irrigation guy come out today, Wed. 8/18/21. He found both valves had "sodder material" in the valves (probably from the plumbers installation), which he said would cause the problem I was having. He first replaced one valve, which had sodder material in it and that didn't fix the problem so replaced the second and it also had sodder material. I had told the irrigation guy when he came that I had a plumber replace the ball valve joint and install a water pressure regulator and had him come back to make sure it wasn't something related to his installation. The irrigation guy was very good. Grass Kings - ***** Before he started he said it would be $355 if he replaced the two valves if perchance they were old like 10 yrs or so, maybe do it all at once. I knew one of the valves had been replaced in the last several years and a new one had been installed in May of this year so I opted for the one valve replacement ($155) that he knew was bad. As he got into it he discovered both needed replacing and both had "sodder material" in them which would easily cause my problem. He replaced both and still only charged me for one, $155. After all this I checked the prices of ball joint valves and the exact same water pressure regulator the plumber installed. Total $152.86. That means $477.99 of that $630.85 was labor for 1 1/4 hr. work. Then on top of it, no pressure gauge and it cost me another $155 to fix the valves because of the sodder getting in the line and valves. Now I will still have the cost to install a pressure gauge in the line. I would be interested to know what other plumbers would have charged for this same job. I was foolish for agreeing to this price quote.
