I had the number for American Airlines customer service as 800-433-7800, which I later found out was 800-433-7300. They represented themselves as an American Airlines agent for the entire hour we were on the phone. I needed to make a change to an itinerary and they said I needed to pay 149.95 taxes and fees on the new ticket, but the tax amount would appear in my AA Advantage account as a travel credit since I also paid it on the original ticket. Shortly after we hung up, I got another charge for $50 from the airline, so I called them to ask why I was charged again. They assured me the 149.95 did not come from them and told me about the scam. There must be a lot of people getting this number mixed up, so basically this company answers the calls and represents themselves as American Airlines agents. They put the customer on hold and call the airline directly, pretending the be the customer and has the change made to the reservation. I could see my reservation had been updated, which made it look legitimate like they were a real American Airlines agent. They got away with my credit card number, email address, mailing address, date of birth and American Airlines account information (which has the travel credit sitting in it). I had to spend many hours on the phone afterward with American Airlines and the bank securing my account information and am hoping they aren't able to do anything else since they have my date of birth and other personal information. Luckily I already have a freeze on my credit due to all the fraud and scams going around.
