Was lured through a fake CBC article claiming Mark Carney announced, at the recent leaders debate, a government platform to help Canadians invest in cryptocurrency with government backed deposits. The website I was brought to looked very much like CBC, but was actually momentbeat.com. I thought they were sharing the CBC article. There were 2 direct links, one into the article and a button link at the end of the article. Both for CanFirst an investment platform. I was asked to submit my first and last name, email, and phone number. An account manager would reach out after I submitted this info, and less than 2 minutes later I received a call. The caller was very savvy at getting me to give more personal information through what came off as polite conversation. Information that would be useful to try and pretend to be me, but not accounts or ID or anything like that. My brain finally kicked in and I backed out of the call politely. I then received a call to follow up and answer questions as apparently they just hired a bunch of new staff and perhaps there was confusion. I requested that my information be deleted and account closed and was met with deflection. I began to explain that I had made a mistake and been directed to their services by a fake article and the person responded with mild hostility saying I was accusing them of trying to scam me. I hung up.
