Description

On January 27, 2025 I was looking for an economical place to buy bird food & raw peanuts. I thought I found it when I found rubeshop.com. It had all kinds of pet food and supplies imaginable on the site. I picked the items I wanted & placed my order. Right before I submitted my order the site stated that I would receive an order confirmation in my email. I did also, as I do with all orders, take a screenshot. When I didn’t have an email by the following morning I became suspicious so I tried contacting the company. The phone number went to a voicemail with no company identification. Just a generic voicemail box. The customer service email didn’t work either and upon examination it’s just a generic customer service email. No company identification there either. Next, I used Google street view to look up the site address and lo and behold the street view showed a private residence not a business. At this point I’m freaking out so I took to the web to see if anyone else had a similar experience. I found a discussion about rubeshop.com on Reddit stating that this place was a scam & a few of the people had to also file disputes with their credit card companies or PayPal. This is the point where I contacted my bank to dispute the charge before it fully processed or was sent to the scam merchant. My receipt showed charges of $79.92 but my bank card was hit with a $82.32 charge and a Foreign Funds fee of $2.47. The last item that convinced me this was a scam was when I saw the foreign funds fee hit my account. This company was supposedly located in California so there should be no foreign funds fee. I was able to contact my bank. They were able to reverse/stop the charges but I had to cancel my bank card to avoid future problems. In the end my fast action worked out for me but in my research, it didn’t for others. I’m hoping to save someone else the hassle or loss of money. Especially, in these times.
