This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.
In order to add my daughter to my AmBetter insurance, I searched for the AmBetter customer support number. Google AI presented a phone number, which I called, and was connected with an agent who asked a number of “security questions”, which in retrospect were worded in such a way as to divulge personal information. One of those questions was “Can you confirm for me the amount of your last payment?” I took some time to find it, and after saying it was “$700-something”, the agent stopped pressing for information, and shortly after I was told that my insurance would not be increasing very much, and that my new monthly payment would be $751.90. I was sent a link to myplanassistance.com, where I signed documents agreeing to the new amount. When they asked for my debit card, they asked to “verify whether a middle initial is on the card”, to which I replied that I have two middle names, and gave the specifics of how my name is on the card, thinking I was answering the question with the most clarity I could. I was also given a callback number of (888)554-7679, which I recalled and asked for whom they worked, to which they replied “Health Insurance”, and “we work for many different insurance companies”.
