Scam information

This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.

Description

The scammer was a Black male who gave the name William Youngblood and said he was from Detroit, MI. Scammer was selling magazine subscriptions as donations for a literacy program. He said he was doing this to get a second chance and stay out of jail and explained that he earns a commission on the sales that allow him to pay for basic living expenses. He used compassion and a sense of urgency to manipulate. While there were several red flags, I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and gave him a check made out to the company Optimum Readers Service (optimunrs.com). I researched the company immediately after the scammer left and determined that it was in fact a scam. I stopped the check via my bank.
