This content is based on victim and potential victim accounts. Government agencies and legitimate business names and phone numbers are often used by scam artists to take advantage of people.
Scammers left a voicemail on 6/12 from the reported number and stated that they were employees of Spectrum (Internet/tv/phone) and they had a new offer to assist with the recent loss of our low income discount assistance which ended recently and asked that I call back on the number that called. I called back on 7/10 and they offered a$40 discount off my bill for the next 3 years if I got a Target or other store gift card for $350 within 100 minutes and call the billing department back at 1-888-550-5196 and give them the promo code sbc7885. He claimed his name was Mike Coleman and sounded like someone from the Middle East. So since I had the day off and went to Target 5 minutes away and asked the service desk if they we running a promotion with Spectrum like the caller claimed and two levels of management never heard of it so I knew it was a scam. I mentioned to my neighbor that I was checking it out on my way to Target and he called Spectrum to ask about this and they told him it was a new scam they believed to be done by recently hired trainees that quit after the training program. 7/11 I get a Tex text from (612) 354-6260 that said I didn’t meet the deadline of the promo code and now I’m getting a $900 charge and to call billing department at (888) 550-5196 to avoid this charge. I have taken no action on this since I became aware it was fraud and just wanted to report it in case it helps others.
